국내 '귀신물 다큐' 폐지원인에 대한 의미구조

Abstract

본 연구는 과거 시청률이 높았던 방송프로그램이 폐지되는 과정에서 외부통제요인들이 어떤 작용과 역할을 했었는지 알아보고자 시도되었다. 1997년을 전후로 '귀신물 다큐'라는 다큐멘터리를 표방한 새로운 장르의 프로그램이 등장하기 시작하였는데 특히 MBC ' 다큐멘터리 이야기 속으로'와 SBS '토요 미스터리 극장'의 경우는 시청률이 매우 높은 프로그램들이었다. 하지만 이런 유형의 '귀신물 다큐'는 국내의 다양한 외부적 통제요인들에 영향을 받으면서, 결국 1999년 2월 초에 폐지되고 말았다. 이후 '귀신물 다큐'라는 장르는 지상파 방송에서 영원히 사라졌다. '귀신물' 프로그램의 폐지원인은 단순한 TV 프로그램 편성의 문제만이 아닌 우리 문화 속 저변에 깔린 또 다른 사회적인 특수성을 내포하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 방송프로그램의 폐지에 영향을 끼치는 외부적 통제요인과 내부적 통제요인들의 상관관계에 대한 각 의미소들을 추출하여 '귀신물 다큐'의 프로그램 폐지과정에서 각기 어떤 역할을 했는지 그 의미구조를 살피고, 최종적으로 각 통제요인들과의 전체적인 상관관계를 '그레마스의 행위소' 모델을 통해 알아보았다. 이론적 배경은 크게 세 부분으로 구성되었다. 첫 번째 에서는 기독교의 역사와 성서의 형성과정에서 나타나는 악마의 기원에 대해 다루고 있는데, 기독교가 왜 '귀신물 다큐'에 대해 강한 거부감을 가지는 지에 대한 이해가 필요해서이다. '귀신물 다큐'를 폐지하는 데 가장 주도적이었던 시민단체가 바로 기독교를 바탕으로 한 종교단체이다. 기독교의 '귀신물 다큐'를 폐지해야한다는 논리가 겉으로는 비과학적이며, 국민정서에 심각한 악영향을 조성한다고 하지만 실재 기독교의 역사라는 속살을 자세히 들여다보면 기독교의 악마관이라는 뿌리 깊은 이유가 존재한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 실재 서양역사에서 이교도를 정복할 때 모든 잔인한 행위에 합리화를 주는 구절들은 바로 악마이고 이 모든 '악마론'의 출발은 바로 구약이다. 두 번째, 에서는 이러한 성서 속에 나타나는 악마론으로 인해 동양의 귀신 또한 악마와 동일시되고 있는데, 서양의 악마관과 동양의 귀신관이라는 문화적 차이에 대해서 설명하고 있다. 세 번째, 에서는 '귀신물 다큐'가 폐지되기까지 다양한 내 외부적 통제에 영향을 받았는데, 기존의 선행연구들을 통해 그동안 알려진 외부적 통제요인과 내부통제요인들에 대한 이해를 위해 구성되었다. 그리고 연구방법에서는 을 주로 설명하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 도출 해내기 위해 사용된 연구방법이 바로 그레마스의 기호사각형과 행위소 모델인데, 이러한 분석틀의 원리에 대한 이해를 돕고자 구성하였다. 연구문제는 크게 두 가지로 구성되었는데, 첫 번째는 외부통제요인들과 '귀신물 다큐'의 의미구조 관계를 그레마스의 사각형을 이용해 나타냈고, 두 번째 연구문제는 연구문제 1에서 나타난 의미구조 결과를 기반으로 하여 행위소 모델을 적용하였다. 연구결과에 나타난 외부적 통제요인과 '귀신물 다큐'의 관계를 보면 특이한 점을 찾을 수 있었는데 방송사라는 내부적 통제요인이 정치적 통제요인을 만나면서 우호에서 비우호로 급전환 한다는 사실이었다. 표면적으로는 방송사 내부의 자율적 통제요인으로 인해 '귀신물 다큐'는 폐지되었지만 사실상 외부적 통제요인들의 지속적인 압력과 연계작용이 가장 큰 이유였음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 행위소 모델을 통해 나타난 전체적인 통제요인들과 '귀신물 다큐'의 관계를 바라보면 여기서 가장 주도적으로 폐지에 영향을 준 주체는 '기독교윤리실천운동'이라는 종교단체였으며, 이러한 모든 폐지원인의 깊은 심연에는 서양의 문물을 받아들이면서 함께 수입한 기독교문화가 국내에 사회문화적 패러다임으로 뿌리 깊게 형성되어 있다는 점이다.

In this study, I tried to find what outside control factors were involved and what influences and the roles they played were present when some popular programs with high ratings were abolished, in the past. 'Ghost Docu' programs started being made in 1997 and were considered a new documentary genre. 'Into the Story' by MBC and 'Saturday Mystery Theatre' of SBS were especially well received by the viewers. Such new 'Ghost Docu'programs, however, were locally controlled and finally disappeared in early February, 1999. They have never come back. The reason for their disappearance was not just a matter of TV programming, a kind of social uniqueness largely embedded in our culture. I collected internal and external controlling factors that could bring some TV programs to an end and then found each semantic feature about the correlation and role in the process of abolishment. Finally I used the Greimas' models actantiels to find the correlation among the controlling factors. There are four theoretical basis for this study; the first part deals with the origin of ghosts in the history of Christianity and their formation of the Bible. It is necessary to know why the Church had a strong resistance against those ghost programs. It was Christian groups that took the lead in bringing the programs to the end. The abolishment was largely considered unreasonable and many people think that affected the sentiment of the public. When we take a closer look at the history of the Church, however, there has been a deeply-rooted reason, the 'Theory of Devil.' In fact, in the history of the West, the phrases that justified all the brutal actions when the Church conquered pagans always had something to do with devils and the beginning of every 'Theory of Devil' was no other than the Old Testament. In the second part, , because of the 'Theory of Devil' found in the Bible, the eastern ghosts are considered the same with the western devils. The cultural differences between them are shown in this part. In the third, < The Abolition of TV programs and the Controlling Factors>, various internal and external factors made 'Ghost Docu' disappear. I tried to analyse the internal and external factors that have been revealed to this point through previous studies. The main method I have used for this study was . Greimas' quadrangle and modele actantiel helped me reach the conclusion of this study. There were two study topics; first, the structural semantic relation between external controlling factors and the 'Ghost Docu' was evaluated with the method of Greimas' quadrangle and to study the second topic the modele actantiel was applied based on the study result of the topic 1. According to the result, there was a uniqueness in the relation between the external controlling factors and the 'Ghost Docu.' When a broadcasting company, an internal factor, meets a political controlling factor, its favorable aspect turns dramatically unfavorable. It appeared that the programs were put to an end by the companies' own factors but actually they were under continuous pressure and influence from external factors. Finally, when I look at the relation between the controlling factors as a whole and 'Ghost Docu' as a result of the modele actantiel study, the main player to make the programs disappear was the 'Christian Ethics Initiative', a religious group. Behind all these was the Christian culture. It had come to Korea when we had accepted Western culture and has since been deeply rooted as a social and cultural paradigm in this country.
