기후변화에 대한 제주도민들의 의식과 행동

Abstract

기후변화는 우리나라 뿐만 아니라 전 지구적으로 가장 이슈가 되고 있는 환경문제이다. 현재 발생하고 있는 심각한 자연재해의 거의 대부분이 기후변화가 원인으로 작용하고 있다. 이러한 기후변화 현상에 대해 사람들이 의식하고 있는 정도는 어느 정도 될 것인지와 그 심각성에 대한 연구는 현재 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이 논문은 기후변화 현상에 대해 제주도민들의 의식과 행동이 어떠한 인구통계적 및 사회경제적 특성을 보이는가에 대한 연구이다. 더 나아가 제주도민들의 환경주의 가치체계와 소비자 성향이 기후변화 현상에 대한 의식과 행동에는 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지에 대한 연구이다. 기후변화의식은 환경의식의 하위 개념으로서, 기후변화 현상에 대한 지식과 그에 대한 이해를 바탕으로, 기후변화 현상의 대응 필요성을 지지하고 행동으로 실천하고자 하는 정도라고 간략히 정의할 수 있다. 이러한 기후변화의식을 경험적으로 분석하기 위해 구조화된 질문지를 통해 제주도민들을 대상으로 표본을 선정하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 제주도민들의 기후변화 현상에 대한 인식의 수준은 인구통계적 및 사회경제적 변인 중에서 연령, 교육수준, 가구 월수입, 거주지역, 직업이 기후변화 현상에 대한 의식에 영향을 미치는 것으로 보인다. 또한 환경주의 가치체계와 소비자 성향도 인구통계적 및 사회경제적 변인 중에서 거주지역, 성, 가구 월수입이 환경주의와 소비자 성향의 가치체계 형성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난다. 기후변화 현상에 대한 인식의 수준은 인구통계적 및 사회경제적 변인보다는 환경주의 가치체계와 소비자 성향이 미치는 영향이 더 많다. 본 연구는 사회 전반에 걸쳐서 이슈가 되고 있는 기후변화 현상에 대한 의식을 제주도민 이라는 지역적 차원에서 분석하였으며, 제주도민들의 인구통계적 및 사회경제적 변인과 기후변화 현상에 대한 의식과 행동 간의 관련성을 규명하였다는 점에서 의의를 가지고 있다.

Climate change is one of the big environmental issues in Korea and all over the world as well. Most of the current serious natural disasters having occurred are caused by climate change. A lot of studies on people's consciousness on its seriousness and how many people realize about the current state of climate change are in progress. This thesis is aimed at analyzing the salient demographic and socio-economic profiles of Jeju citizens in terms of their consciousness on and behavior towards climate change. The aim is extended to analyze the influence of environmentalism and consumerism as a value-system on the consciousness and behavior being configured. The consciousness on climate change is a sub-concept of environmental consciousness, being defined as the extent how strongly people support the necessity against climate change and practice in everyday life on the basis of their knowledge itself and understanding on the knowledge. In order to achieve the objectives, this thesis a sample survey with 300 adults aged 20 and over was conducted with a structured questionnaire. The following were found to be significant from the sample survey. Age, educational attainment, household monthly, residential area, and occupation are the significant demographic and socio-economic profiles impacting on the determination of the consciousness on climate change. However, environmentalism and consumerism were found to be determined significantly by residential area, gender, and household monthly income. Environmentalism and consumerism were found to be more significant factors determining the consciousness on climate change than demographic and socio-economic factors. Based on the above findings, the significance of this thesis is to analyze the consciousness on climate change as a current hot issues prevailing in all over the world, even though the research was done with special reference to Jeju citizens. Another significance is that this thesis attempted to analyze the causal relationship between the two factors - demographic and socio-economic profiles, the consciousness on and behavior towards climate change.
