A STUDY ON
Abstract
Jeju Island Bonpuri has been recited from ancient up to the present and is the oldest type of thinking system as well as literature. The collective unconsciousness of the enjoyment group is included in Bonpuri. SeGyeong Bonpuri among the Bonpuries has such a wide range of contents that it can be compared with modern novel. SeGyeong Bonpuri myth tells that the main character JaCheongBi made farming possible by bring 'yeoldusimanguk', seeds of the five grains, and buckwheat seed for the first time, which seated JaCheongBi as a god of SeGyeong due to the achievement.
This article aims to examine the contents of SeGyeong Bonpuri among the Jeju Island Bonpuries, treasures of Korean shamanism myths, and analyze it by approaching to it from analytical psychology perspective. The significance of this study is to discover the collective unconsciousness of the myth formation · enjoyment group by tracing the main character in the myth JaCheongBi and to search for the possibility of individuation which is the harmonization of the collective consciousness and its underlying unconsciousness of the myth transmission group.
While studies on SeGyeong Bonpuri up to now has been investigating the collective consciousness of the myth transmission group and to reveal its implication of literary history and cultural history, this article revealed the collective unconsciousness underlying in SeGyeong Bonpuri by investigating the internal personalities, anima-animus of the main character beyond the interpretation of the external personalities, persona. The results showed that SeGyeong Bonpuri exhibits the individuation process in which anima and animus become united, to say, be come one complete entity. This individuation process can be regarded as one of the ancient thinking patterns which also can be seen in other ancient myths such as Greek, China, and India myths paralleled with the context of androgyny myths. In Jeju Bonpuri besides SeGyeong Bonpuri, the prototypes of primitive antipole conflictsand resolution can be found in many places. The prototypes include this world vs. the other world, man vs. woman, and life vs. death. Although these Bonpuries also reveal the collective unconsciousness oriented toward the individuation process, they do not include the androgynous unification process revealed in SeGyeong Bonpuri It can be said that SeGyeong Bonpuri markedly shows the androgynous unification, that is, the individuation process where anima-animus are unified as one complete entity.
It is regarded that this article provides a new opportunity to see Bonpuri, a source for thinking in Korean literature, from different viewpoints because this article does not approaches to the collective consciousness but to the collective unconsciousness of the enjoyment group. However, it is only one study on SeGyeong Bonpuri. Future task would include the studies to examine the whole Jeju Island and korean shamanism myths as well.
