영어로 하는 영어수업에 대한 교사의 불안 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 초등학교 교사들이 영어로 진행하는 영어수업을 하면서 느끼는 불안요인을 파악하고, 효율적인 영어 학습을 위해 교사불안감을 해소하는 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 위해 문헌연구, 선행연구를 통하여 설문지를 구성하여 제주도에서 근무하는 120명의 교사를 대상으로 교사들이 느끼는 불안감에 대해서 조사하였다. 실태 조사한 설문은 SPSS 17.0을 이용해 통계처리를 실시하였으며, 그 결과 제주도 교사들의 영어로 하는 영어수업에 대한 불안감에 대한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교사의 영어능력 향상을 위한 프로그램이 필요하다. 설문을 통해 나타난 교사들의 의견은 어떠한 형태로의 영어연수이든지 자신의 영어능력 향상이나 영어로 하는 영어수업의 질적 향상에 도움을 주는 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 따라서 학교교육의 질적 향상과 영어수업의 학부모의 신뢰도 향상이라는 부가적 효과를 제외하더라도 교사들의 자신감 향상을 위해 의무적인 영어연수가 필요한 시점이라 판단된다. 둘째, 영어 진행 수업의 성패가 교사에게 달려있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 교사의 능력이 큰 비중을 차지하는 영어진행 수업을 효과적으로 운영할 수 있는 영어교사를 육성하기 위해서 교사 스스로의 노력이 절실하다고 하겠다. 영어 교수법에 대한 교사자신의 노하우 습득뿐만 아니라 연구기관에서의 효율적인 영어교육 방법 등을 연구하여 제시하고 많은 시범식 교육과 프로그램을 개발하여 교사가 능동적으로 참여할 수 있도록 유도해야 할 것이다. 셋째, 영어로 진행하는 영어수업을 활성화하는 방안으로 영어진행수업의 수업모형을 계발하여 교사들이 활용할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 그에 따른 방법으로 영어 학습사이트의 활용과 원어민 보조교사와의 협력 수업을 제안하고자 한다. 또한 원어민 교사뿐만 아니라 같은 학교에 있는 동료교사의 도움도 필요한 것으로 설문조사 결과 나타났는데, 수업에 대한 정보교환과 연수경험자, 영어전공자들의 도움이 비연수경험교사, 비영어전공교사에게는 유용하고 실질적인 도움이 될 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

The main purpose of this study is to figure out teachers' anxiety factors teaching English in English and to suggest strategies to effective English education. In Korea, English education is mostly given inside the classroom and purpose of learning English, nowadays, is focused on rather actual communication with foreigners than just understanding of language itself. Therefore, at least the classroom where English is normally used, students must take a communication-centered English course with the help of English teacher. A total 120 teachers in Jeju participated in a survey for this study. The teachers were given a questionnaire composed of 6 items investigating personal characteristics, 30 items about situations which they felt anxiety with teaching English in English and last 1 item searching for strategies to resolve their anxiety. Many teachers feel anxiety with teaching English in English according to various situations and personal characteristics. Besides, those anxieties have a strong influence the English class. In this paper some ideas are suggested for teaching English in English . First, fluent English proficiency and teaching skills are important for teachers to teach students. Therefore various training programs should be offered to teachers which reflect and focus on teachers' demands in order to improve their abilities. Second, success or failure of class depend upon teachers' abilities. Therefore teachers' must make an efforts for an effective English class, they can find out teaching methods and improve their English skill. Third, class models of teaching English in English to vitalize English class were supplied. Those ways are to use web sites on the internet and to cooperate with an other teacher or a native-speaking instructor. For successful teaching English in English, meaningful interaction in English between teachers and students is required. In addition, more research studies about teachers' anxiety are necessary.
