A study on the time and space in the novel of A young moon and a night ship written by Chae-Bong Jeong
Abstract
The space and time is a fundamental principal in understanding of a work. Grasping the contents of a work without understanding of a stream of the space and time is very dangerous. Because, the space and time in a work is a fundamental element makes the work possible to achieve. This treatise examines a structure of the space and time in 『A young moon and a night ship』.
First, we can recognize a stream of the past, present, and the future as the essential time. The part of 'the mind of child and the purity' in 『A young moon and a night ship』, Nanna maintains a clean and pure life and lives progressive life toward the future. And, in the part of 'the dream and the memory', Nanna recollects the past and dreams the wish in order to coping with the uncertainty of the future. In doing so, he finds a meaning of the self-existence.
On the other hand, the time is divided into the religious time and the human time. In the view of 'the religious sublimation and the salvation', I searched for the spirit of salvation of Nanna transcending a disorder and wandering during an adolescence so as to keep the pure soul. And, in the view of 'the tension and the instinct', we can observe Nanna sometimes discouragements and loses a hope. At that point, the reader can identify the more deep truth. In『A young moon and a night ship』, the human time is the moment feeling a death or despair in the course of a mental conflict.
Likewise, the time can be divided into the eternal time and the momentary time. In the section of 'the fatal mission', we can foresee the rough fate of Nanna has to accept inevitably through the past of father and grandfather. And, in the section of 'the lyricism and the sensibility', this work's lyricism is strengthen by the transformation of time into the timelessness and space.
The space in 『A young moon and a night ship』is considered in order of a growth of Nanna. Nanna was born in 'kaet-bat(the foreshore)' and spent a time until 4th grade of primary school. In childhood, the 'kaet-bat' is all to Nanna in the world. Then, Nanna moved to Yeosoo. In there, Nanna lived with difficulty. For the first time, Nanna could recognize the broader world out of the 'kaet-bat'. Then gradually, Nanna couldn't stand the skepticism of life and went to Seoul. By that course, he met a new life. In this way, the space of this work takes its station in the novel revealing its meaning on such occasions.
First, I examined the 'kaet-bat' the space of growth and rebirth in order to analyze the meaning of the Nanna's space. He grew up spiritually and physically in 'kaet-bat'. The sea is the most important element in Nanna's life, and Nana find his position through the sea. Everything starts and ends in the spatial order from the sea. So, the 'kaet-bat' is the origin of life to Nanna.
Nevertheless, the 'kaet-bat' appears in the image of despair and death. Suffering the violence of uncle, Nanna's mental state becomes the sea wants to go down into the abyss. Also, the pain of estrangement from unsuccessful family makes the fear confined in a basement with only one wall. It's the 'kaet-bat' that Nanna meet the death of his father in dream. Also, his grandmother died in there. Because, the 'kaet-bat' is the complex space to Nanna. In other words, the 'kaet-bat' is the space of growth, but the space of death and ghost connoting the fear.
Yeosoo, the region for Nanna's family moves to becomes the internal space seeking the absolute self. Nanna wanders because of the complicated and hard life. But, his consciousness keeps himself persistently is always awaken. It protects him from falling down to the dark of abyss. It's like a stone prevents him from running into the world of transparent immateriality. Like a shining lamp, or the weight of stone bearing the world of water and light, Nanna talks about the hard period in Yeosoo in the way of horizontality and verticality. However, he fixes Yeosoo as the space of symbol, that is a wagon wheel has fixed central axis with moving circumference.
Nanna wanted to quit his wandering. So, he went to go Seoul like a leaving home when he was in high school. Seoul is described as the space of will in 『A young moon and a night ship』. The will has the meaning of heliotropism, light, storeroom under the roof, and transcendental will and blooms in the bottom. The life of Nanna is merely a life of nameless flower. But, we can see the awareness of salvation entering into religion with pure soul in spite of hard cemented city. In that point, this work obtains the human value.
In 『A young moon and a night ship』, the stream of time is very clear than other bildungsroman. In addition to, this work portrays the human space breathing with the nature. It's the characteristics of this work that the story is similar to the writer's and the history of race and family is piled up one on another. Also, it represents the warmth of human despite of living in an estranged space.
The above is the study of the time and space in 『A young moon and a night ship』. There is much room for inquiry about this work hereafter. For example, we can make a study about the point of imagination. It will be conducted in the future.
