The Manner of Cultural Reception in Epic Shamanistic Songs of Jeju
Abstract
'Epic shamanistic songs of Jeju' are myth on the shamanistic gods. Plenty of stories have been handed down. This study is to identify the characteristics of epic shamanistic songs of Jeju in certain periods the primitive, the ancient, and the medieval period. Furthermore, distinctive features of those three times will be discussed, and thus several points will be revealed as follows.

'Bonhyangdang epic shamanistic song of Seogwipo', one of the primitive eposes, can be interpreted to reflect the wish of primitive people who performed a religious service for the hunting god to pray for the prosperity of the game. 'Chunjiwang epic shamanistic song'shows how people in those times perceived the beginning of the heaven and earth. It also has a primitive heroic feature which can be traced back to 'Jumong myth'. Jeju epos illustrates punishmentsfor the evil as well. This indicates the moral sense. Incidents like transformation of dead people display the idea that evil men take divine punishment even after the death, which is the combination of a primitive notion that explains the origins of matters in addition to the moral sense.

Ancient eposes includea birth myth of nation in the first place. Since 'Samsung myth', the birth myth of nation Tamna, is found only in the books, it is difficult to identify how the epos was formed at first before it was handed down by word of mouth. Yet the original shape of the epos could be referred to 'Bonhyangdang epic shamanistic song of Songdang' and 'Quennekitdnag epic shamanistic song' carefully. Both songs are now handed down orally from the past. In addition, 'Chogong epic shamanistic song' shows its relations to 'Jumong myth'. "E-gong epic shamanistic song' has similarity with 'Jumong myth'as well. It also has many things in common with a variety of genre. Shamanistic epos from 'Jumong myth' seems to have passed on in the mainland Korea, however it has come to Jeju and been modified as stories of flower inspectors.
'Samsung-grandma epic shamanistic song' is an epos on the fertility god. At the part where two goddesses are fighting over the status of fertility god, primitive ideas like competition among gods were still alive in the ancient period. Moreover little stories on flowers are described as a form of rebirth and revival from the vitality, primitive image of flowers. Little stories aboutrebirth and revival can be interpreted that ancient people wished for prosperity through rebirth.

'Segyung epic shamanistic song', one of the medieval epos, aims to approachmodern times by showing progressive and active lifestyle of the main character, Jachungbi. 'Chasa epic shamanistic song'is about Gangnim, who is from lower class but has better features than two powerful figures Yumnawang and Wonnim. Yumnawang belongs to this world and Wonnim to that world. The development of people's awarenessand the criticism on the authoritarian class can be seen in the 'Chasa epic shamanistic song', one of the medieval eposes. 'Samgong epic shamanistic song' is an epos on Junsangsin, the god of fate and stresses the idea that the fate of a man never changes. Since the idea is similar to that of ''a tale of Seodong' and 'a tale of Simchung' of the mainland, it can be said that 'Samgong epic shamanistic song' is a mixed one under the influence of these two stories. 'Chisung epic shamanistic song' tells that there was oppression on customs of shams from the centerat that time. "Godaejang epic shamanistic song' and 'Yang-e-mok epic shamanistic song' make it clear that there was a conflict between the center and the districts during the medieval time.
