Abstract

On April 17, 1975, Khmer Rouge communists took over Cambodia. They wanted to create new Cambodia with their own bizarre communist ideal attempting to turn Cambodia into an agrarian society. Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge, studied in France for four years and was fascinated by the communist ideal there. He abolished all institutions, education systems and social infrastructure, and then forced all Cambodians into the countryside to work in forced labor camps. During his reign it is estimated that 2 million Cambodians were murdered, starved, and killed by disease. This book was written by the Cambodian people who suffered great pain under the rule of vicious Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. It includes twenty-nine real stories of Khmer Rouge regime's survivors. Each survivor was a child at that time of Cambodia's holocaust, and each tells of families torn apart, loss of innocence, ceaseless struggle to survive against all odds, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit.
