A Study on Hyen Kil-un's 4․3 Novels
Abstract
Hyen Kil-un is a writer who steadily gave shape to the truth of 4․3 through novels. He published medium and short novels during the early period, and published long novels in the mid 1990s. Entering the 2000s, he gave shape to 4․3 in the form of juvenile novels. This shows that his interest in 4․3 is continuous, deepened, expanded, and diversified.
The purpose of reviewing Hyen Kil-un's 4․3 novels was to understand the writer's view of the world and his themes. Furthermore, we aimed to find clues to the flow of his 4․3 novels since the 1980s.
In this study, we divided Hyen Kil-un's 4․3 novels into three periods: ① medium‐short novels in the early and mid 1980s; ② medium‐short novels in the late 1980s; and ③ long novels and juvenile novels from the 1990s. The contents of discussion so far are summarized as follows.
His works during the early and mid 1980s include Returning Home(귀향), Our Ancestors(우리들의 조부님), By the Passing Wind(지나가는 바람에), In the Remote Future(먼 훗날), A Pheasant's Cry(꿩 울음 소리), and Fire and Ash(불과 재). Novels in this period see 4․3 from the viewpoint of family. The major concerns are hatred and anger among the family members, mortifying death, search for reconciliation, etc.
His works during the late 1980s include Early Dawn(미명), Exorcism for Comforting Souls(무혼굿), A Homeless Soul(집없는 혼), and The End of Deep Dreariness(깊은 적막의 끝). These works inquire into the issue of ideology while seeing 4․3 from a gradually objective viewpoint, and on the other hand, focus on the disclosure of truth and the pattern of its practice.
His works from the 1990s are long novels. Women's River(여자의 강) exposes 4․3 in connection to women's unfortunate fate, but it cannot be said to cover 4․3 in earnest. Through roman‐fleuve Mt. Halla(한라산), he attempts holistic understanding of 4․3, but the job is not completed. Entering the 2000s, he handles 4․3 in the form of juvenile novels. The contents of I Was Eleven at That Time(그 때 나는 열한 살이었다) and Where Have All Gone(다들 어디로 갔을까) say that one suffers while experiencing the incident but ultimately he grows through them.
Hyen Kil-un's 4․3 novels reveal the tragedy of the incident in the form of family novels. A series of his works for explaining the tragedy of a family objectively and holistically needs to be observed further. His recent novels show the possibility of recovery. His 4․3 novels can be summed up into 'the exposure of wounds and treatment and recovery from them.' However, this evaluation is provisional. When his 4․3 novels are completed at the end, the characteristics of the novels will be explained more clearly.
