개화기 기독교학교가 근대교육에 미친 영향

Abstract

한국 교육사(敎育史) 가운데 개화기 신교육(新敎育)이 차지하는 의미는 매우 높다. 개화기는 전근대적 사회에서 근대적 사회로 이행하는 시발점이었을 뿐 아니라 교육도 구교육(舊敎育)에서 신교육(新敎育)으로 발전한 시기였기 때문이다. 그런데 한국이 개화기 이후 근대 교육이 발전하는 과정에서 선교사들이 세운 기독교학교(基督敎學校, Christian Mission School)가 차지하는 공헌도는 매우 크다. 당시 한국사회가 직면한 여러 가지 상황에 적절히 대처하는 교육활동을 전개하였던 것이 기독교학교였기 때문이다. 그러므로 본 연구는 초기 선교사들의 선교사업의 일환으로 시작된 기독교학교가 한국의 시대적 정치·경제·사회 속에서 교육이념, 교육내용, 교육방법 등을 통하여 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는가를 살피고 한국의 근대교육에 공헌한 점을 구명하려는 데에 그 목적을 두었다. 또한 이를 달성하기 위하여 다음과 같은 내용을 고찰하고자 하였다. 첫째, 당시의 시대적 배경과, 선교사들의 입국과 더불어 설립되어져 가는 초기 기독교학교의 설립과정을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 개화기에 설립된 기독교학교의 교육활동을 교육목표, 교육내용으로 나뉘어 분석하였다. 셋째, 개화기 기독교학교가 신교육 도입 및 한국 근대교육 발전에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는가를 고찰하였다. 선교사들이 갖고 있었던 신교육 사상에 의해 기독교학교의 교육목적, 교육내용, 교육방법은 이전의 전통적인 교육과는 판이하게 달랐다. 한국의 순미(純美)한 고유문화를 바탕으로 한 정신사상 위에 근대문명에 관한 지식을 주고 과학적인 생활을 하게 하여 실력있는 문화인으로서 기독교의 진리를 실천하며, 교회와 국가를 위하여 봉사할 수 있는 정신을 갖춘 인재를 육성하는 것이 교육의 목적이라고 보았다. 선교사들의 이러한 교육목적은 그들이 설립한 각 학교의 교과과정에 분명히 드러나 있다. 즉, 한국적인 전통을 무시하지 않았고, 성경·영어·물리·화학 등의 서양의 근대적인 교과목으로 편성되었는데, 이 점은 당시 한국의 개화 또는 근대화와도 밀접한 관계가 있는 것이었다. 또한 인간이면 누구나 교육을 받을 권리가 있다는 사실을 깨우쳐 주었으며, 양반이나 서민의 자녀를 불문하고 누구나 차별 없이 교육을 받을 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써, 교육의 기회균등 사상을 심어주는 결과를 가져오게 되었다. 기독교학교는 신문화수용에도 적극적인 태도를 보여 이를 보급하고 발전시켰다. 특히 성경과 찬송가의 번역, 음악과 체육 교육의 활성화, 의료를 통한 사회개혁은 서양의 문물제도를 소개하여 한국으로 하여금 교육의 근대화를 추진하는데 크게 기여하였다. 또한 고난받는 국가와 민족을 구원해주기 위한 수단으로 기독교학교가 전개한 사업이 민족교육이었다. 즉 국가와 민족이 열강의 침략의 대상으로 전락한 때에, 기독교학교는 교과교육, 교과외교육을 통하여 학생들에게 민족정신을 길러주었던 것이다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 기독교학교가 한국의 근대교육 발전에 공헌한 긍정적인 면에 관심을 두고 고찰한 것이다. 따라서 기독교학교가 그들의 교육활동을 통하여 한국 사회에 준 부정적인 영향에 관한 연구는 다른 사람의 몫으로 남겨 두었다.

The purpose of this study was to delve into how the educational ideals, content and methods of missions schools, which were built as part of mission work by early foreign missionaries, affected the nation across the board, and what contribution they made to early modern education. It's specifically intended to look into the historical background of the enlightenment period and the establishment of early mission schools by foreign missionaries, to analyze the education of those mission schools in terms of objective and content, and to discuss how those schools affected the introduction of new education and the development of Korean early modern education. Owing to the thoughts of missionaries about new education, education provided by mission schools was a far cry from traditional education in terms of object, content and method. They didn't take Korean heritage lightly at all, but their curriculum was made up of modern Western courses like the Bible study, English, physics and chemistry. That had something to do with the civilization or modernization of the nation, and mission schools made the thought of equal educational opportunity take root by informing people of their right to learn and providing them with that chance without discrimination. Mission schools were enthusiastically receptive to new culture. They played a critical role in spreading and developing new culture, introducing Western civilization and eventually stepping up modern education. Moreover, those schools instilled the national spirits in students by offering academic, extracurricular and vocational education. Thus, it's attempted in this study so far to shed light on the contribution of missions schools to the development of early modern education in Korea.
