A Review and Critique of the Modern Civilization Reflected in Natsume Soseki's 『Sanshiro』
Abstract
『Sanshiro』is the first story in the early trilogy written by Natsume Soseki, who is revered as Japan's "national writer." This novel, one of his representative works, is well known as a coming-of-age novel, depicting a youngman named Sanshiro, the name of the story's protagonist. Sanshiro, a genuine country boy, comes up to Tokyo from his hometown Gumamoto to enter not only Tokyo Imperial University but also a modern world and he grows up from a boy to a man, forming his identity while encountering a number of people and incidents. However, this study mainly looks into the Japanese society in a transitional period leading to a modern state, focusing on how Soseki's critical thought toward modern civilization is expressed in the work.
Soseki's stay in England gave himself the opportunity to rediscover the reality of Japan. As a result, he was able to gain an insight into Japan's modernization and such a critical view is reflected in this novel.
He observes Japan's westernization through a variety of metaphors. First of all, he likens Japan's loss of directions in building its modern state to that of Sanshiro when he is faced with the new environment of Tokyo. Again, it is seen that Sanshiro's disorientation in his life in Tokyo is the very reflection of Soseki himself when he went astray in London, the center of industrialization, after witnessing discrepancies or errors coming from the modernization or industrialization at that time.
Next, it is noted that Soseki sharply criticizes Japan's modernization employing the words of Hirota sensei, Sanshiro's friend, who is apparently Soseki's alter ego. In the story, Hirota sensei himself signifies "great darkness," which may be looked upon simply as darkness to snobs who just follow modernization. However, his darkness is like a treasure buried in the soil, which shines more brightly than the light of modern times. That way, this darkness can be great and contains the paradoxical meaning that it critizies the light. It is found that the metaphor, "great darkness", represented by Hirota sensei plays a significant role which encourages Sanshiro to contemplate essential issues of modern times and broadens his horizon on the modernization.
Lastly, a metaphor for Meiji Era, "astray sheep" is dealt with. In the novel, a young woman named Mineko says these words to Sanshiro and they become a theme throughout this study. This phrase is simply pointing to his contemporaries wandering about and the nation being adrift without direction in the course of modernization during the Meiji period. It can be perceived that to Soseki, the subject of modernization or modern civilization is the task that should be grappled with by then Japanese intellectuals. It may in turn explain why he is titled as "national writer" because he took up the task of unearthing such problems of the times in depth through his literary world.
