Abstract

Cheju Island, the representative tourist resort in our country, is encompassed by naturally gifted resources with the surrounding sea, which makes it the attraction of marine leisure tourism resort second to none. Its potential to become an area with a high quality marine leisure tourism might be vary large from the entry permission without any visa along with its drive for the Free International City. However, it lacks unique and enjoyable products for tourists comparing to the surrounding tour resort, and the field of marine leisure tourism has not been generalized and to popularized yet. In addition, as only small number of scholars have been studying any systematic research in the academic world, it is necessary to suggest the directions to the marine leisure tourism industry as well as the vitalization in the study of marine leisure tourism in the future. Therefore, this study aims at finding out a plan to vitalize more marine leisure tourism by analyzing the problems and current status regarding the marine leisure tourism industry that might be called our future tour industry around the Cheju area having the conditions of marine leisure tourism industry blessed by Mother Nature. The life style and the theories on the marine leisure tourism were arranged with the precedent studies through studying the literature in order to accomplish such research purpose. Subsequently, the empirical analysis with the tourists of the marine leisure tourism in the study area of Cheju area was carried out, and a plan to promote the marine leisure tourism in the Cheju area based on the results from the analysis of current status as well as the theoretical study was suggested. The theoretical analysis was done through a survey with the tourists of the marine leisure tourism in the Cheju area, and the frequency analysis was used to investigate the demographic characteristic, visit pattern, life style, characteristic of significance and achievement. The factor analysis was carried out to test the validity as well as the reliability analysis using the Cronbach's alpha to secure the reliability for the research tools. ANOVA was performed to study the significant factors of the marine leisure tour depending on the life style and to see what difference there might be between the significance factors and achievement factors. The regression analysis was also carried out to see what impacts such significance factors and achievement factors have on the overall satisfaction of the marine leisure tourism. The plan to vitalize the marine leisure tourism in the Cheju area based on the results from the empirical analysis suggests the following proposals. First, safer and more convenient transportations should be secured for tourists in the marine leisure tourism. Second, it is necessary to ensure to open the sea bathing resorts all the year round, enabling tourists to enjoy the marine leisure tourism at all seasons. Third, the products for tourists such as the marine tour products in connection with fishing villages should be developed, helping the local economy to revitalize. Fourth, more convenient and safer activities for the marine leisure tourism should be assured by securing various equipments and special manpower that can be used safely by tourists in the marine leisure tourism. Fifth, the meteorological system for the safe activities in the marine leisure tourism, i.e. the electronic alarm facilities for the weather phenomena should be installed in the marine leisure resorts in addition to the sea bathing resorts to secure the safety of the marine leisure tourists. Sixth, prior subscription to the insurance policy should be provided for the safe activities of the marine leisure tourism. Finally, the support in the taxation and incentives to the rental facilities for the marine leisure equipment from the autonomy should be granted to use the expensive equipment at an inexpensive price. This study has a limitation in the generalization for the whole nation as the study area was limited to Cheju Island although it studied the marine leisure tourism in the Cheju area depending on the life style. In addition, it also has another limitation in that the life style of the marine leisure tourists was concentrated on certain fields as the marine leisure tourism in our country is focused mainly on certain fields such as swimming or fishing, etc. Therefore, the future, in-depth studies for a variety of marine leisure tourism should be carried out through the further nationwide, in-depth and detailed analysis regarding a range of the marine leisure tourism such as windsurfing, skin scuba diving, etc., which have become active in the recent years.
