『서정 담시집』에 나타난 워즈워쓰의 자연관

Abstract

18세기의 합리주의와 신고전주의의 규범과 전통을 부정하고 이성과 질서의 존중에 대한 반발로 나타난 낭만주의는 당시 프랑스 혁명과 산업혁명과 더불어 사회의 큰 전환점 중의 하나였다. 이러한 낭만주의의 본격적 시작이라 할 수 있는 1798년 『서정 담시집』의 출판은 영국 문학에서 크나큰 이슈였고 특히 『서정 담시집』의 서문에 실린 "좋은 시는 강력한 감정의 자연스러운 발로"라는 것, "시인은 사람에게 말하는 사람", "시어는 평범한 사람들의 실제적 언어를 사용해야 된다"는 그의 견해는 당시 문학 사조에서 굉장히 혁명적 발언이었다. 본 연구는 『서정 담시집』에 담긴 낭만주의 문학사상을 바탕으로 워즈워쓰(W. Wordsworth)의 주요한 여러 가지 개념론에서 특히 자연의 의미를 고찰하는데 중점을 두고자 한다. 그는 태어날 때부터 늘 자연과 벗하고 교감하며 자연을 친구이자 보호자 나아가 스승으로 삼으며 성장했다. 즉, 그는 자연에 신이 존재한다고 믿는 범신론자였다. 그는 체험을 통해 자연관을 형성해 나갔고 그의 시정신도 그와 더불어 성장해 갔다. 그래서 그는 자연에서 깨달은 진리를 세상 사람들에게 전하고자 했다. 이러한 그의 견해는 『서정 담시집』에 나온 그의 초기시에 많이 표현되어 있고 그 중에서도 「틴턴 사원」에 함축적이고 종합적으로 나타나 있다. 본 연구의 필요성은 워즈워쓰의 시가 자연에서 얻어지는 기쁨을 우리에게 제공하여 즐거움을 느끼게 하는 비범한 능력이 있다는 점에서 위대하다는 이유와 그가 자연을 통해 추구하고자 하는 궁극적 도덕적 진리가 무엇인지 알아보기 위해서이다. 따라서 「틴턴 사원」을 중심으로 한 그의 시를 통해 그가 체험했던 자연이 그 자연을 다시 찾았을 때 시인의 상상력을 통해 회상되고 재창조되어 도시의 소음 속에서 외로움을 느끼고 슬퍼할 때 축복받은 기분을 주고 위안을 주어 마음을 고요하고 평정된 상태로 바꾸어 준다는 즉, 자연은 인간에게 아름다움과 기쁨을 주고 마음을 치료해 준다는 보편적 진리와 자연의 아름다움을 사랑함으로써 상대적으로 다른 인간을 사랑하게 된다는 도덕적 진리를 일깨워 준다는 것을 알아보고자 한다.

Romanticism that appears as an opposition to rationality and order of Rationalism and Neoclassicism was a turning point in both the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution in 18th century. With the publication of Lyrical Ballads in 1798, we are able to say that it was a full-scale opening of Romanticism that was a large issue in British literature. Especially Wordsworth's views which "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings", "Poet is a man speaking to men", and "Poetic language is a real language of men" in the Preface of his work Lyrical Ballads were very revolutionary comments about aspects of the trend of literature at that time. The purpose of this thesis is to make clear the meaning of nature based on Romantic ideology in Lyrical Ballads. Wordsworth grew up being associated and sympathized with nature from times he was born. It could be considered to be his friend, guardian, preceptor and teacher. That is, Wordsworth was a pantheist believing that God exists in nature. He built up his own view on Nature through experience and his spirit of poetry grew up as well. He tried to tell the message which is perceived from the Nature. His viewpoint in Lyrical Ballads is expressed very much in case of his early poems, especially in "Tintern Abbey" implicitly and synthetically. The necessity of this thesis is to know the reasons why Wordsworth's poetry is great, because it has remarkable ability to make us feel joy by providing us with pleasure from nature and in order to recognize what the ultimate moral truth that he will pursue through nature is. Therefore, from his poetry we can realize that Nature gives us a blessing mood and comfort and then exchanges our mind with a calm and serene state. When we feel loneliness and sadness in the noise of a city, we can remember and recreate through imaginations of a poet when we took again back nature. It means that nature can enlighten us and we can recognize universal truth that nature gives beauty and pleasure to men and cures our mind, and the moral truth that we become more loving, relative to other men by a loving natural beauty.
