Ceramic Vases Motivated from the Images of Volcanic Rocks Distributed in Jeju Island
Abstract
Human beings share a meaningful sympathy with nature, and get a sense of creative inspiration from naturally available artistic elements.
Moreover, nature provides a sense of emotional balance which effectively aids our recovery and balances our weary minds and bodies from our contemporary barren-hearted industrial society.
In the above context, this study focused primarily on investigating and analyzing Jeju volcanic rocks (distributed around Jeju Island). Essentially these were a series of common decorative items found in our neighbourhoods creating formative embodiments of various volcanic rock forms. These provided both functional and decorative inspiration to make formative artworks of the flower vase.
In order to achieve the above, this study addressed general theories, historical backgrounds and the influence of vases, whilst examining the geological origins and aesthetic characteristics of Jeju volcanic rocks. In particular, it sought to identify different shapes, textures and colours of basalt and tuff, and modify them to perform a formative reconstruction of volcanic rock images.
For such a formative artwork, this study adopted a coarse-grained stone clay with a high strength. It used hand building techniques such as the spinning method, slab method and modelling method to create formative artworks. Next, the artworks were decorated with a harmonious combination of basalt and tuff images by ripping off, carving or scraping the work piece. The glazing was applied differently to maximise the vases aesthetic effect and functionality.
This study found out that our ancestors had a natural simple artistry and created a lot of formative vases embodying flexible lines and plain beauty in a harmony with their religion and daily life. This enabled them to recognize and appreciate their most profound values.
Owing to a series of trials and errors in the process of making the artwork, this study could detect and improve gaps in vase-making techniques whilst recognizing how to make formative image expressions fit a particular vase.
Jeju volcanic rocks were employed as a good material for making flower vases owing to their various shapes, textures and inherent porosity. They gave a chance to the author hereof to investigate, express and develop his inner formative consciousness.
Furthermore, it is expected that Jeju volcanic rocks will impart a feeling of natural landscape, a sense of living refreshment to contemporary people who live in a sophisticated social structure. They will also hopefully offer a well balanced decorative value to the field of interior design.
