"불꽃처럼 나비처럼"과 "ELIZABETH-THE GOLDEN AGE" 의 영화의상 연구 -명성황후와 엘리자베스 여왕 1세를 중심으로-

Abstract

영화 의상은 예술적, 상징적인 의상으로 영화의 주제, 배우의 캐릭터, 극적인 상황의 이미지 등이 의상을 통해 표현됨으로써 극적인 전달 효과를 극대화 시키는 역할을 한다. 여러 장르의 문화 예술 공연 중에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 영화에 대한 대중들의 많은 관심이 높아짐에 따라 영화 의상에 대한 관심도 높아지고 있다. 특히 역사적 실화를 바탕으로 기획된 시대극 의상은 영화의 주제, 배우의 캐릭터, 극적인 상황의 이미지 등의 정보를 관객에게 직접 전달하는 가장 효과적인 도구이다. 더불어 복식사적 고찰을 통한 재현 및 재해석된 영화의상은 더욱더 관객들에게 효율적인 이미지 전달을 수행하는 역할을 한다. 그러므로 영화의상이 상황에 따른 극적인 이미지 표출을 위해 어떠한 상징적 의미를 함축시켜 표현되는지를 연구하는 것은 매우 의의가 있을 것이라 사려된다.

따라서 본 연구에서는 시대적 배경으로 기획된 시대극인 ?불꽃처럼 나비처럼?과 ?엘리자베스-골든 에이지?를 비교 ? 분석 ? 해석하였다. 즉, 영화?불꽃처럼 나비처럼?에서의 명성황후와 '엘리자베스-골든에이지'에서의 엘리자베스 여왕의 영화의상을 비교 ? 분석하기 위해 극의 스토리 전개 상 두 주인공의 공통적인 캐릭터가 표출된 장면들에서 유추된 다섯가지 이미지로 분류하여 분석하였다. 첫째, 정치에 참여하는 정치인으로서의 카리스마, 둘째, 사랑받는 여인으로 살아가고 싶은 내면, 셋째, 정치적 갈등에서 온 극도의 슬픔, 넷째, 반대 세력에 맞선 강인함, 다섯째, 죽음을 두려워하지 않는 당당함 등이다. 이 다섯 가지를 기본으로 두 주인공의 성격과 상황적 스토리에 의해 표출된 의상들을 선별하여 비교 ? 분석하고, 그 결과를 근거로 함축된 상징적 의미를 유추 ? 해석할 수 있었다.

따라서 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정치인으로서의 카리스마를 표출시킨 두 주인공의 의상을 비교 분석한 결과, 두 주인공이 왕비와 여왕이라는 지위 차이는 있지만, 그 무엇보다도 두 주인공의 의상에는 정치에 필요한 카리스마가 함축되었다. 둘째, 사랑받는 여인으로 살아가고 싶은 내면에서의 두 주인공의 의상을 비교 분석한 결과, 여인으로의 삶과 왕비 또는 여왕으로서의 운명적 삶 사이에서 갈등하는 내면의 상태가 함축되어 있음을 도출할 수 있었다. 즉, 두 주인공의 극 중 의상에는 이중적 내면의 갈등이 함축되었다. 셋째, 정치적 갈등에서 온 극도의 슬픔에서의 두 주인공의 의상을 비교 분석한 결과, 두 주인공의 의상 표현기법에는 차이가 있지만, 그 무엇보다도 슬픔을 함축시킨 부분은 유사하다. 즉, 두 주인공의 극 중 의상에는 슬픔이 함축되었다. 넷째, 반대 세력에 맞선 강인함에서의 두 주인공의 의상을 비교 분석한 결과, 두 주인공은 상황적 차이가 있지만, 두 주인공의 의상에는 적에 대응하기 위한 강인함이 공통점으로 도출되었다. 즉, 두 주인공의 극 중 의상에는 강인함이 함축되었다. 다섯째, 죽음을 두려워하지 않는 당당함에서의 두 주인공의 의상을 비교 분석한 결과, 시해와 암살이라는 상황에서 두 주인공의 운명적 지위인 조선의 국모와 영국의 국왕으로서의 위엄을 지키며 죽음을 두려워하지 않는 당당함이 공통적으로 도출되었다. 즉, 두 주인공의 의상에는 당당함이 함축되었다. 이와 같이 동서양이란 지리적 차이, 시대의 차이 및 지위의 차이가 있는 영화라 하더라도 유사한 극적인 상황에 따라 표출된 영화의상의 상징적 의미가 유사함을 유추할 수 있었다.

그러므로 영화의상의 디자인에는 영화의 극적인 분위기의 표현은 물론 이에 따른 상징적 의미도 함축되어야 함을 제안하고자 한다. 또한 다양한 장르의 영화의상 디자인 시도에 다양한 표현기법을 제공해줌으로써 영화산업의 발달을 촉진시킬 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있다고 사려되며, 더 나아가서는 영화의상을 예술의 한 장르로 예술적 가치를 부여하는 데에 밑거름이 되리라고 본다.

The movie costumes, artistic and figurative, serve to maximize the dramatic conveying effect of the movie's theme, actor's character, and the image of a dramatic situation expressed through clothing. As the public becomes more interested in the movies, the most accessible of the many cultural artistic performance genres, the interest in costumes is also increasing. Especially the costumes made for dramatization of historic events based on facts are the most effective method to directly transfer information, such as the movie's theme, the actor's character, and image of a dramatic situation, to the audience. Added to that, the reproduction and the reinterpretation through historical costumes convey the image more effectively to the audience. Therefore it is considered that research would be meaningful if it studied on how the movie costumes are implied with symbols in order to present a dramatic image depending on the situation. Therefore this research compared, analyzed, and interpreted the historical plays produced on historical backgrounds, 'Like fireworks like butterfly' and 'Elizabeth – Golden Age'. In other words, five dramatic situations were extracted in order to compare and analyze the costumes of Empress Myeongseong of the movie 'Like fireworks like butterfly' to the costumes of Queen Elizabeth from 'Elizabeth – Golden Age' First, the charisma as a politician involved in politics, second, the inside that wants to live as a loved woman, third, the extreme sadness from political conflicts, fourth, the strength against the opposing power, fifth, the nobleness that does not fear death, and such are the situations extracted. The costumes presented according to the storyline and the personalities of the two characters with these five as the basis are compared and analyzed, and the implied symbolic meaning could be interpreted and analogized based on the results. Therefore the summation of the results of the research is the following. Firstly, having compared and analyzed the costumes of the two characters that show the charisma as politicians, even though there was a difference between their status as queen and empress, both had the charisma needed for politics compressed in their costumes. Secondly, having compared and analyzed the inside of the two protagonists who want to live as loved women, one could derive that they were in an inside conflict between the life as a woman and the destined life as a queen. In other words, the costumes of the protagonists had an ambiguous inner conflict compressed in them. Thirdly, having compared and analyzed the costumes of the protagonists who are in extreme sadness due to political conflict, the two costumes are similar in that both imply sadness even though expression technique may be different. In other words, the sadness is implied in the costumes of both of the characters. Fourthly, having compared and analyzed the strength of the two protagonists when facing the opposite side, even though there may be differences regarding the situation, both of the protagonists' costumes derived the strength to face the enemies. Fifthly, having compared and analyzed the costumes of the two characters who show nobleness in not fearing death, there was nobleness that did not fear death and the dignity of the destined status as the monarch of England and the Mother of the State of Chosun even when facing regicide and assassination. In other words, the costumes of the two protagonists implied nobleness. As shown, one may extract that there are similar symbols of the movie costumes presented at the dramatic scene even though they may each be from different movies. Therefore it is suggested that symbolic meaning, along with the expression of the dramatic atmosphere, needs to be implied in the design of the movie costumes. Also it is considered that providing diverse ways of expressing in the attempts of designing movie costume of diverse genre may not only be a method to fasten the development of the movie industry, but also is the baseline in giving artistic value to the movie costumes as a genre of art.
