초등학생의 영어 어휘학습전략, 어휘능력 및 성취도에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 현재 초등학교 5학년 학생들이 어떤 영어 어휘 전략을 사용하고 있는지 그 실태를 파악하고, 어휘 학습 전략의 사용과 어휘력, 영어 성취도 간의 관계에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 이를 검증하기 위해서 먼저 어휘전략 사용에 대한 설문을 실시하였으며, 어휘력 평가와 성취도 평가도 함께 실시하여 이들 사이의 관계에 대해서 상관분석 하였다. 연구결과 학생들의 어휘 학습 전략 사용 빈도의 차이가 있으며, 여러 학습 전략을 사용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 어휘 학습 전략 중에서 학생들이 발견 전략을 다른 전략들에 비해 많이 사용하였다. 이는 이 시기의 초등학생들의 발달특성과 관계된 것이라고 생각된다. 둘째, 어휘학습전략 사용과 어휘력간의 관계를 분석한 결과, 어휘 능력이 높은 학생일수록 어휘학습 전략 사용 빈도가 매우 많다는 것이 검증되었다. 셋째, 어휘력과 영어성취도 간의 관계를 분석한 결과, 이 둘 또한 매우 강한 양의 상관관계가 있음이 검증 되었다. 마지막으로 영어 어휘 학습 전략, 어휘력, 영어 성취도 이 세 영역간의 관계 분석 결과, 역시 양의 상관관계가 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 영어 어휘 교수와 학습에 몇 가지를 시사하고 있다. 첫째, 어휘력이 높은 학생일수록 어휘 전략 사용의 양 자체가 매우 많다는 것이다. 전체적으로 볼 때 어휘력과 어휘전략 사용의 양이 매우 유의한 양의 상관관계가 있으므로, 여러 어휘 전략들을 모든 학생들에게 소개하고 가르칠 필요가 있다. 그 후에 어휘학습 전략들 중에서 무엇이 자신에게 잘 맞는지 학생들이 취사선택할 수 있을 것이다. 둘째, 어휘력평가와 영어성취도 간에 매우 뚜렷한 양의 상관관계가 있으므로, 학기 초 진단 평가 시 기존의 듣기 문항평가와 더불어 읽기 문항을 통한 어휘력 평가를 첨가하여 문자언어 영역에 대한 학습을 보충할 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 학생의 실생활과 관련된 어휘를 가장 자연스럽고 유의미한 학습 환경에서 도입하기 위해서는 영어 동화책을 통한 읽기교육이 가장 적합하며 효율적이라고 생각한다.

This study attempts to figure out the state of using Primary school learners' vocabulary learning strategies and investigates the relationship between lexical competence, proficiency and vocabulary learning strategies. To verify a hypothesis, I carried out a survey on vocabulary learning strategies, a vocabulary test and a proficiency test. Then I analyzed the correlation among these three research tools. The result of the research showed that there are some frequent differences when using vocabulary learning strategies among learners, but learners use various strategies. Discovery strategies are used more than other vocabulary learning strategies. This phenomenon relates to the developmental stage of this age's learners. Second, the result of the correlation analysis between Using Vocabulary Learning Strategies and Lexical Competence have a positive correlation with each other. That means that the higher Lexical Competence learner uses more vocabulary Learning Strategies. Third, the result of the correlation analysis between Lexical Competence and Proficiency also have a strong positive correlation. The results of this study can be used to provide a better method for English teachers. First, those who have high lexical competence use a lot of vocabulary learning strategies already. So teachers need to teach and introduce every vocabulary learning strategy to all learners. Then, learners can be properly select strategies that they want. Second, there is a positive correlation between lexical competence and proficiency. Therefore lexical competence test can improve and complement the proficiency test as written language. Third, to make the most meaningful learning environment for learning real vocabulary and what learners need that practicing reading is the best and most effective way to acquire better vocabulary.
