A Study on Appreciation Guidance of Abstract Art in Middle School Education
Abstract
As there is a growing interest in art recently, it has become easy for us to see works of art in our every day life. In addition, they have become popular culture that everyone can appreciate and enjoy, not high culture which is enjoyed by a few special people.
Abstract art makes up a very large portion of contemporary art. The concept and various expressions of abstract art have allowed us to break away from fixed perceptions of ours and to open ours eyes to the new world of visual art. Furthermore, abstract paintings are being put to use in various forms of art and the field of design, and thus are closely connected to our life now.
Works of art having a tendency toward abstractness continue to make progress, holding a key post in school education and therefore becoming increasingly important.
However, while there are plenty of works that imply abstract meanings, there is a lack of expertise and studies on theoretical education so it is difficult to understand abstract paintings.
Therefore, this study focuses on developing students' ability to understand abstract paintings and to appreciate them by looking at those paintings in a new way, and also focuses on developing teaching methods which can be put to use in actual art classes for appreciation of abstract art and also meet the interest and desire of students.
This study analyzed the domain of abstract paintings found in 5 art textbooks(Kyohak Publishing Company, Jihaksa, Iljinsa, Doosan Dong-A, and Institute for Better Education) that were reedited in 2010, comparing each publisher. Also, based on the problems of each textbook, it investigated and analyzed the actual conditions of textbooks, and considered the effectiveness of appreciation of abstract art in the current art textbooks used in middle schools. The findings of the analysis of 5 textbooks are as follows.
First, it is important to allocate time for class of appreciation of abstract paintings. The current 7th educational curriculum does not have enough class hours for art and as a result, it is very difficult for teachers to use various teaching methods. Since being able to understand abstract art serves an important role in contemporary art, the average hours for art class should be 3 to 4 hours a week and teachers should have a continued interest in studying teaching methods for abstract art.
Second, it was found that the current art textbooks have more painting classes which concentrate on functional reproduction of objects and there is an insufficient amount of content for abstract art in those textbooks. The analysis of 5 textbooks shows that there are little explanation of abstract artists and theories of abstract art history, let alone specific explanation of it. Thus, there should be reference works of art relating to an abstract in textbooks so that they can be taught connecting each domain of art stage by stage in a balanced way. Like this, when art textbooks have a variety of content and an appropriate portion of each domain, they can contribute to cultivating students'individuality and creativity. In order to carry out more effective education for appreciation of abstract art, it is necessary to pursue constant research efforts and improvement rather than settle for the existing textbooks.
Third, among 360 works of paintings in the art textbooks, the number of works by artists is 276(77%) and the number by students is 84(23%), so there are insufficient works of students compared with those of established artists. Not only works of well-known painters but also paintings of students serve an important role in the textbooks because when appreciating the paintings of their peers, students can learn art more easily and have confidence in themselves.
Fourth, although a relatively large number of practising teachers make up the writing staff for art textbooks, in order to reflect practical education implemented in the classroom in the art textbook and make art education more flexible, most of the writing staff should be practising teachers.
Fifth, since professionalism or the link with other units are not met when one person writes several units alone, experts of each domain should participate in writing textbooks to compensate the defect.
This study has its meaning in seeking effective teaching methods for appreciation of abstract paintings by analyzing the domain of abstract art focusing on art textbooks used in middle schools to help students develop the desirable ability to appreciate abstract art and help teachers carry out successful art education that meets the interest and desire of students.
