A Study on Global Business Strategy of International Courier Service Company
Abstract
This study is aimed at researching what global business strategies international courier service companies have established and how they have expanded their businesses in international courier markets. The problems of korean courier service companies and solutions to them are drawn based on the findings from the study.
Some well-known global courier service companies such as FedEx, DHL, UPS and TNT have built their own international networks to achieve economies of scale. The establishment of their networks provides the companies with the driving force behind entering global markets without depending on their domestic market. One possible reason for its establishment is the result of their business expansion operating aircraft. Currently, many global international courier service companies place emphasis on economies of scale through aggressive marketing strategies targeting all around the world.
Global courier service companies have established global business strategies through strategic alliances, M & A and joint ventures.
Business strategies of global international courier service companies are divided into five sectors; the establishment of combined transportation system, the application of information technology, strategic alliances, M & A, a joint venture, brand marketing, green logistics and total logistics service. Brand marketing and green logistics are the fields which receive a great deal of attention as future global business strategies.
One of the problems that the domestic courier service market has is that it is too competitive. Furthermore, it concentrates only on inbound logistics and it prohibits courier service companies from launching into the global market.
Therefore, domestic courier service companies need management innovation at this moment to grow into global logistics enterprises. The items for the innovations are as followings.
First, The domestic market expects the appearance of companies providing air courier service.
Next, it needs to reduce the number of global courier service companies.
Third, parcel service businesses flooded with authorized retail stores have to be converted to a direct control system.
Finally, it needs management innovation based on corporate culture.
The competition among global courier service companies in the market is gradually intensifying due to the globalization of world economy. It means that Korean courier service companies have to compete with not only domestic companies but also with global companies to survive in the global market.
Accordingly, domestic courier service companies must analyze the strong and weak points of successful global companies and, at the same time, establish management strategies to try to actively enter the global courier service markets.
