Discussion of Mori Ogai(森鷗外)'s 『MuHee(舞姬)』
Abstract
The topic of this thesis is on the protagonists' Toyotaro and Alice's contemplation on love in Mori Ogai's debut novel "MuHee."
Oguy was the first-born son in a family that consisted of worriors and spent his childhood in a strict atmosphere, where success was viewed as the greatest value. As a solider, he advanced to a high status, and even in his life as a solider, he still worked actively as in the literary arts a critic, translater, novelist, and poet.
"MuHee" is a novel that represents the modern Japanese romantism and drew the love and despair of the young man Toyotaro and German girl Alice, who lived in the Meiji Dynasity.
This novel is based on Ogai's own experience studying abroad in Germany and the true Elysee case. Ogai studied in Germany as a medic, and this experience had a great impact on his literary activities. After Ogai returned to Japan after his studies, he was put in a difficult position by a German woman, who goes by the name of Alice in the novel, that followed him to Japan, and caused theElysee case.
The protagonists Toyotaro and Alice have a contrasting view on love. Toyotaro's love for Allice started from the sympathy that he felt for Alice, who lived in poverty. The emotions of love was not expressed as 'love' in itself, but in the 'external factors.' Toyotaro did not feel the obligations to take responsibility in his actions and left Alice to return to Japan. In other words, he did not love in a way that broke principles, he did not truly love. Alice, on the other hand, loved Toyotaro in a passionate and devoted motherly love. In other words, her love was true love that made you feel his sense of responsibility and earnestness.
In this way, they strove for a different type of love, which made their love disjointed from one another and caused the tragic ending.
