The abalone offering in the Joseon dynasy
Abstract
Throughout history, power has shifted downwards. It runs downwards and spreads out to its surroundings without obstruction or resistance under the proposition of custody and control.
People showed the signs of their obedience to power, of which the one was an offering to the king. Their offering was meant to devote their treasure to the high. It was to pay a tribute to their king or superior officer, apart from their tax and their corvee which were required to support a country's system and finance. Among the tributes was an abalone included, which was considered an unusual item at that time. That's because it was regarded as rare and invaluable. In those days, it had to be caught in so deep an ocean of some areas that it needed the divers' know-how and pains. In addition, it was the kind of a living thing that could go sour easily. It was presented to the palace, where it was special food. Thus, it was always served on the king's dinning table even when he went on a long journey outside the palace. And it was also used as a typical present offered to Chinese emperors, let alone an offering for the important national memorial service.
In the Joseon dynasty, which had been based on the king and the formality, an abalone was considered so precious that the courtiers and the local officials made all efforts to supply it to the king. Its national offering was surveyed in this thesis on the basis that Jeju's women divers had gone out for it throughout the country since the Joseon dynasty. First of all, more than 20 terms referring to an abalone, which were shown on the historical documents, are surveyed in this thesis. Second, there were its habitats found in 「Jiriji」 of the early Joseon dynasty and those of the whole country during the Joseon dynasty in 「Sinjeung-dongguk-yeoji-seungram (Newly Revised Augmented Survey of the Geography of the Eastern Kingdom」 and 「Yeojidoseo」. Finally, 󰡔Yeojidoseo」 and 「Gongseonjeonrae」 including the national towns or Eupji were utilized to compare the amount of their offerings from every region in a contemporary way. During the process of surveying, this thesis was intended to look at and study the abalone offering at the national stand as well as possible.
However, making a general overview of the amount of their offerings or the local weight of the day and the importance of Jejudo as the region of an abalone offering, this thesis was faced to the challenge which made the study limited to Jejudo. For that reason, this came to an end by dealing with the challenge and investigating the facts of the supplying field through the approach to avoid a duplication of the established studies.
