A Study on the Story of Empress Jingu
Abstract
The story of Empress Jingu, who is believed to have conquered Shilla, is included in a number of classical literature including Kojiki, Nihonshoki, Fudoki, Manyosyu, KogoShui, ShinsenShoujiRoku and SendaiKujihongi. It has been heavily studied by both Korean and Japanese scholarship as it features the controversial issue of conquest of Shilla in the two countries' history.
The story has been examined in three aspects. First, the historical approach focuses on the empress herself and the truth of conquest. Second, the symbolic meanings of the story are analyzed in a mythological point of view. Third, an attempt to combine those two streams of study into one is also made. In this thesis, the mythological aspect of the story of Empress Jingu is primarily examined.
The essence of the story consists of two legends, one of which is Jinkaiseki legend closely related to the birth of Ojin Emperor. The other legend tells about the mother god and her son arriving by Utsubobune across the ocean. Additionally the significance of Empress Jingu's role as shaman and her lineage that traces back to Amenohiboko on her mother's side are also examined.
The legend of mother and son gods is associated with Hachiman religion which confirms its relationship with Shilla. The Jinkaiseki legend also shares attributes with Korea's oviparity tale and suggests its association with Shilla. Therefore on the base of these two motifs the origin of Empress Jingu story is explored and the relation between these motifs and Shilla culture is examined.
In this thesis, the entire story, the character of Empress Jingu and the six components of the story are introduced before probing the Jinkaiseki legend in which Empress Jingu held off delivery by tying a rock around her waist when feeling labor pains before the attack on Shilla. Jinkaiseki originated in the folklore among the fishermen of Ito region. The evolution of this folklore into the legend of Jinkaiseki suggests the Shilla immigrants who brought the oviparity tale from the Korean peninsula to Japan.
The birth of Ojin on the shore of Kyushu and the motif of crossing the ocean on the funeral boat are confirmed to hark back to the legend of mother and son gods. The Japanese version of this legend particularly reveals its relation with Shilla as suggested in the legend of Akaruhime, the goddess from Shilla, and Hachiman.
From this study it is concluded that the story of Empress Jingu is incomprehensible without the consideration on its backdrop in which Shilla immigrants who brought their own mythological tales into Japan.
