A Study on the Current Use of the Exterior Building Materials of Multiple Dwelling Houses in Jeju;Focused on the Houses Located in Shinjeju Area since 2000
Abstract
This thesis aims to prepare basic data to be utilized in the future when designing a reasonable and desirable plan for choosing the exterior building materials for multiple dwelling houses by carrying out research on the current use of the exterior building materials and the pattern of the arrangement of colors that have been applied to multiple dwelling houses especially located in Yeon-dong and Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City since 2000.

The analysis results of the exterior building materials of multiple dwelling houses, which were the subjects of a case study, are summarized as follows.

First, dryvit, paint, and granite were mainly used as external wall materials for the multiple dwelling houses. Paint was used for all the external walls of large-scale apartments. When it comes to single-building apartments, granite and dryvit were used for the lower part of the walls, and dryvit and paint were used for the upper part of the walls. Drivit was used for all the external walls of row houses.

Second, gray tones and beige tones were the dominant colors of the multiple dwelling houses' external walls. Gray tones took up a larger portion of the lower part of the walls, and beige tones took up a larger portion of the upper part of the walls. Brown tones and white tones were used for large-scale apartments. Gray tones and beige tones were used for single-building apartments and row houses.

Third, when it comes to types of roofs, large-scale apartments had gable roofs, and single-building apartments and row houses usually had flat roofs. As for colors and materials of the roofs, red-toned asphalt shingles were used for large-scale apartments, green-toned urethane was used for single-building apartments, and green-toned urethane and asphalt shingles were used for row houses.

Before the year 2000, paint was mainly used as external wall materials. From 2000 to 2005, the use of dryvit increased while that of paint decreased. The use of dryvit and granite rose from 2006 to 2011. The dominant colors of the external walls were white tones and beige tones before 2000, but gray tones and beige tones have dominated since then. Before 2000, most multiple dwelling buildings had flat+pent-type roofs that were made of red-toned urethane or
red-toned roof tile. From 2000 to 2005, the types of roofs were usually flat roofs and gable roofs that were made of green-toned urethane or green-toned asphalt shingles. From 2006 to 2011, flat roofs made of green-toned urethane were most often used.

The problems about the multiple dwelling buildings that were subjects of the case study and the suggestions are as follows.

First, only paint was used for the external walls of large-scale apartments. Brown tones were used on the lower parts of the walls and white tones were used on the upper parts of the walls, but it looks simple and feels cold. The large-scale apartments not only do not give a friendly impression but also do not harmonize with the urban landscape of Jeju City.

Second, unlike large-scale apartments, various kinds of materials such as granite and dryvit were used for single-building apartments, but application methods of the materials were simple. In addition, the gray and beige tones of walls and the flat roofs made of green-toned urethane proved that materials, colors and types of the single-building apartments' walls and roofs were uniform and limited.

Third, dryvit was mainly used for row houses, but natural materials such as granite and marble and naturally processed materials such as tile and brick were also used. Although it is not easy to differentiate between lower part and upper part exterior materials because row houses are low-rise multiple dwelling houses, the use and application of the materials were simple and uniform.

Therefore, instead of choosing limited materials, it would be desirable to supplement the use and application of exterior materials by carrying out more research and accept a variety of uses of exterior materials so that the multiple dwelling houses in Jeju can harmonize with the local history and the landscape, building an environmentally-friendly image.
