Analysis of water resources components and water balance in Chunmicheon watershed, Jeju Island
Abstract
Water is an essential resource for maintaining life. Especially in these days, scarcity of water and water quality contamination are rising as serious problems caused by global warming, urbanization, and industrialization. This means that studies on effective management of water resources are required to conduct wise responses to global scarcity of water.
While most of existing studies used NRCS (SCS) method to compute direct runoff, direct runoff was computed in this paper using actual observation data of Choenmi-cheon water base in Jeju Province.
Weather data of 10 locations that belong to the scope of this study were used for precipitation analysis. Data on mean annual precipitation, distribution of precipitation, number of raining days, and number of non-raining days. Runoff was investigated and analyzed using runoff measuring device installed on Seongeup Bridge in downstream region of Cheonmi-cheon. Also in order to compute areal precipitation of the region according to runoff, rain chart was prepared using water level water flow, and precipitation data. Daily runoff was calculated using water level data and water level-flow curve. In addition, evapotranspiration observation data was used to compute evapotranspiration. Finally, water budget analysis was conducted to comparatively analyze the region with existing water budget analysis data.
As a result of conducting water budget analysis on the region, ground water recharge was computed as 119.5 million ㎥/year, which corresponds to 52.6% of annual precipitation. This was not significantly different from ground water recharge in marked regions that ranged between 46.5 ~ 52.5% (46.5% for deficient years, 49.2% for heavy rain years, and 52.5% for average years).
More precise results can be deduced by performing water budget analysis on Jeju Province using more observation data. Such analysis results will become useful in policies on water resources in Jeju Province.
