A Study on Production of Yeollimun's Ceramic Plate
Abstract
Yeollimun technique, one of Korean traditional pottery techniques utilizes unique patterns stemming from the difference in colors of material paper. In Korea, it dates back to early Koryo Dynasty, when Koryo Celadon was produced. However, it doesn't seem to have been widely used since production process is complex and products can be easily broken during the process. For this reason, relics using this technique are only 10 or so. At the present day, owing to development of various colors, paints and new techniques, it is widely used not only in pottery but also in formative arts.
The feature of Yeollimun patterns is the diversity of colors and naturalness of patterns. Regular or natural patterns can be created by a combination of deformation and reformation of abstract, irregular patterns, which are produced by combining and kneading a various kinds of material paper. This study's purpose is to, utilizing this advantage, express images of Jeju's nature such as sea and wind.
I have conducted research on material paper by combining existing white clay, black clay, and Sancheongto and then studied brightness contrast and contrast between line and side in order to draw a pictorial pattern. In addition, I have observed how the number & form of kneading affect the forms of patterns and attempted to changes patterns into natural ones. These research efforts have made me reach a conclusion that Yeollimun technique can be applicable in expressing Jeju's natural images such as sea, wind, and oruem and provided directions and foundations for this research.
Paying attention to expressional technique, a basic condition of creating creative beauty in pottery, I have grafted decorative elements and formativeness onto daily used plates so that I can satisfy modern people's sense of beauty. By inheriting and developing a traditional technique and then creating products through this technique, I'd like to present a new possibility of modern pottery and introduce a decorative element, which can provider spiritual comfort for lives of modern people, who live in ever-changing and novelty seeking society.
