Abstract

As time goes by, current events become the past. The past often effects the present. However, not all of past effects the present. Memories of the past can be seen as changed or newly reconstituted. Tourism resources based on unique local history, effects to taking advantage of the reintepreted local history ac a resoure are being accelerated. Tourism resources that are based on unique local history have their own distinct attraction and competitiveness. A memorial to the darker side of history and commenoration functions as an important touristic resource. In Korea, studies of Dark Tourism such as motivation and satisfaction of visitors of Dark Tourism facilities, study on use of negative place assets, appearance of Dark Tourism in the risk society and other Dark Tourism related theoretical research and studies on sites. Studies shown in other inclued, tourists behavior relating to death, potential of death as a tourism resource, Dark Tourism as an actual space museum, guide way of Dark Tourism and other studies. Historical memories are not fixed and reflect the current lives it begets various interpretations. Dark Tourism is defined as traveling to actual locations of historically associated tragedies, or disasters, or other related events. Since the mid 1990s, Dark Tourism has been recognized for it's importance in academic and social level. Dark Tourism has been studied through a variety of terms. But, as for concept and scope, there are still some different points of views among the scholars. Before beginning academic study, we need to clarify the typical form. Therefore, the need Dark Tourism research through the study of typology, which is to proceed systematically in accordance with the situation in the country is required. There is a limit to apply case of Dark Tourism from overseas tn the domestic research level. The nature and distribution of the range is different. Some cases seen overseas, can't be found in domestic cases. On the other hand, there is the phenomena exist in Korea, which is rare in the other countries. Thus, the need for Dark Tourism research through the study of typology suits Korea, on the basis of domestic cases and studies overseas. Based on the type of domestic Dark Tourism, it's required to study in-depth research, such as studies of the recipient side, provider side, and the difference in types of visiting behavior. Later this study will be a reference to a unified study on related cases.
