교환

Abstract

이 논문은 존 데이비스의 「교환」을 번역한 것이다. 교환은 유용한 물건이 사람들 사이에서 이동하는 수단이고 사회적 위계질서를 형 성․유지하는 방법이며 많은 상징을 내포하고 있는 활동이기에 흥미롭다. 교환은 유 용할 뿐더러 사람들이 나름대로 사회적 위치를 조작하기도 하고 교환에 의미를 부 여할 수 있게 하기 때문에, 사람들은 교환에서 흥미를 느낀다. 그리고 교환은 이 세상에 교환을 하지 않는 사람이 없는 점만 봐도 보편적인 활동이다. 저자 존 데 이비스는 일상적이고 보편적인 교환이라는 활동을 경제 인류학적인 관점에서 여러 학자들의 이론과 비교하고 다수의 민족지학적 예를 통해 섬세하면서도 재미있게 설명하고 있다. 즉 우리가 당연하게 여기면서 무심코 하고 있는 교환이라는 활동 에는 여러 가지 종류가 있으며, 교환마다 결과가 따르고, 때로는 원하는 결과를 얻 기 위하여 교환을 조작하고 통제할 수도 있으며, 사람들이 교환에 의미를 부여한 다는 점에서 교환이 상징적이라는 것이다. 이 책은 어디서나, 언제나, 그리고 누구 나 하는 교환이라는 활동을 색다른 시각으로 바라보는 계기를 제공한다.

This thesis is a translation of the book, Exchange by John Davis. Exchange is interesting because it is a means by which useful things move between people; a way in which people create and maintain social hierarchy; and an activity enriched with symbols. It not only is useful but allows people to manipulate and load their exchanges with meanings, which makes it also fun. Exchange is universal in that it is unknown for people not to exchange at all. The author John Davis explains in a detailed and amusing way this common and universal activity in an economic anthropologic perspective by comparing theories and taking ethnographic examples: There are different kinds of exchanges, which are taken for granted and often done casually; exchanges have consequences; sometimes they can be manipulated and controlled to achieve intended results; and exchanges are symbolic in that they are embedded with meanings. This book provides a different perspective on the activity which is done wherever, whenever, or whoever you are.
