The Differences Among the Types of Consumers' Time Perspective in Fashion Shopping Motivation and Store Choice
Abstract
Competition among fashion companies and fashion distribution channels is intensifying because of changes in the distribution industry environment and consumption patterns of consumers. Understanding and satisfying what consumers need and want have become highly important. The purpose of this study is to understand shopping motivation of consumers and store choices in different time perspective of consumers, and to provide marketing implications to fashion companies and fashion retail stores.
This paper identified time perspective of consumers using Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) developed by Zimbardo and Boyd(1999) and examined the differences among groups in terms of fashion shopping motivation, store choices, average expenditures on clothing, and socio-demographic characteristics. The time perspective scales are composed of past negative time perspective, past positive time perspective, present hedonic time perspective, present fatalistic time perspective, and future time perspective. Fashion shopping motivation consists of hedonic shopping motivation (adventure, gratification, role, value, social, and idea shopping motivation) and utilitarian shopping motivation (anticipated utility, achievement, efficiency, price comparison, and convenience seeking shopping motivation). The store consumers frequently visit to purchase fashion products (apparels, bags, and shoes) was chosen of the first to the fifth by the consumers from twenty different types of stores (department store, brand franchise, Internet shopping mall, discount store and so on). Also average expenditures on clothing and socio-demographic characteristics were measured.
Data were gathered from female consumers aged 20 to 59 using questionnaires via offline and online survey. A total of 465 questionnaires were used in the final statistical analysis. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, rank and percentile analysis, exploratory factor analysis (principal component analysis, varimax rotation, above the eigen value of 1.0), reliability analysis (Cronbach's alpha coefficient), cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA analysis, multiple comparison analysis (Scheffé test), and chi-squared test using SPSS win 18.0.
The research findings were as following:
First, from the exploratory factor analysis, the time perspective of consumers consisted five factors (past negative, past positive, fully present, present fatalistic, and future time perspectives) and fashion shopping motivation of consumers consisted seven factors (low price-oriented, gratification/adventure, achievement, social, idea, role, and efficiency shopping motivations). Second, from the cluster analysis of the time perspective of consumers, five groups were identified: 1) moderate past positive/fully present time perspective (TP) group (n=129, 28.2%), 2) balanced future TP group (n=107, 23.4%), 3) past acceptance/present TP group (n=56, 18.5%), 4) moderate future/fatalistic TP group (n=56, 12.2%), 5) past negative TP group (n=81, 17.7%). Third, there were significant differences among groups in gratification/adventure, idea, role, and achievement fashion shopping motivations but not in low price-oriented, social, and efficiency shopping motivations. Fourth, there were significant differences among groups in the first store choice when consumers purchased apparels and bags but not shoes. Fifth, there were significant differences among groups in socio-demographic characteristics (age, education level, and personal monthly income) but not in average expenditures on clothing and some socio-demographic characteristics (marital status, area of residence, and family monthly income).
This paper can be used for understanding of how consumers are behaving. Also this paper will suggest the marketing implication to shopping channels for consumer attraction.
