A Study on the Improvement of Rural Houses Suitable for the Climatic Conditions in Jeju
Abstract
Jeju is an oceanic climate of strong wind and lot of moisture, Korea's
southernmost island. In addition, Jeju appears different climate characteristics
by altitude and latitude. So, Jeju architectural elements have been developed
around a windproof and moisture-proof. But, Jeju rural house was built in
recent years, environmental characteristics by legion have been neglected.
Jeju rural houses are widely used through the renovation in the suburban
areas of Jeju. However, the renovation has been uniformly proceeded without
also considering the environmental characteristics by legion. So, Jeju rural
houses of today appear easily pollution and damaged material. Not only the
interior of the building, leakage, cracking, mold, a number of problems have
occurred. This problems is that there is no renovation guidelines and research
by regional climate.
In this paper, envelope material and indoor thermal condition in rural houses
was researched to find ways of improving the Jeju rural houses for Jeju
climatic condition.
Research on the Building envelope materials has selected a research area by
classified climatic condition by the altitude and latitude. And field survey was
carried out before checklist was planned focusing on the pollution, damage of
envelope materials and renovation.
Research result, envelope materials was being improved that the areas
receive a lot of influence on the wind is focusing on the roof and the area
receives a lot of influence on the moisture is focusing on the walls. The
materials of steel folded plate by roof and porcelain, stone tile by walls are
mainly used. Most Important element in the building envelope environment
was moisture-related factors. So, rainwater and drainage plan should not to
contaminate the walls, the building skin with enough sunshine that do not much moisture.
research on the thermal condition in rural house has measured two houses
each altitude region, total of six houses by temperature and humidity recorder
installed in summer and winter
Measuring results, indoor temperature was similar to the outdoor
temperature or 1~2℃ high in summer. And in winter, indoor temperature was
lower than the outdoor temperature by 3~12℃. The rural houses were
resolved hot temperature smoothly during the summer by the planing of
facing the opening in Jeju architectural features. But, by humidity
environment section, mold problem and discomfort, ambitious indoor
environment had been created due to the moisture flow. In winter, surface
condensation occurs is a main problem by indoor and outdoor temperature
difference. The higher or lower indoor temperature of indoor space is a
bathroom. And indoor and outdoor temperature difference each houses were
different depending on whether the utility space function in Jeju architectural
features.
As a result, in order to eliminate the moisture of entering into the indoor
install the fan in room unit and planning of facing the opening, bathroom and
utility room functional differentiation is appeared to be effective in summer. In
winter, in order to reduce the surface condensation due to indoor and outdoor
temperature difference ensure appropriate standards of thermal insulation,
auxiliary heating equipment installation and set up the grade of heating space
is appeared to be effective.
Through this paper, the judgment will be important resources for planning
of renovation and construction guidelines by climatic conditions.
