枯死木樹型의 形態的 Image를 活用한 陶瓷造形 硏究

Abstract

In this research, lava tree, that has unique texture amongst various other objects in the nature of Jeju Island, is selected as a main one to express and it is aimed to produce ceramic modeling reflecting figurative features of the lava tree. Also the research has a purpose on suggesting a direction to reveal distinctiveness of Jeju as a new type of glaze using volcanic rock is developed and it is applied to a proto type. Jeju Island has been formed from the bottom of the sea by volcanic explosion, so it is made of 90 percent of basalt. Basalt covering the island has highly influenced on people's way of life in Jeju, which is the background of forming 'rock culture'. Regarding this fact, Jeju's basalt frequently appears in contemporary art of Jeju as well. It is seemed that art works based on materials from Jeju Island can have cultural symbolism, which is connected to how this research has commenced with an idea that the research of Jeju should be conducted from diverse perspectives through observation and exploration of hidden meanings of different materials. Accordingly, this research is about ceramic modeling using lava tree's figurative image, which is focusing on identifying it's characteristics in shape and ecological role and representing these on ceramic works. Further more it makes it possible to display lava's colour, texture and atmosphere after experiments of the glaze made out of volcanic stone. There are two accomplishments in this research; one is possibility of researching new materials in Jeju Island through ceramic modeling with lava tree which is not a well-known object but is a part of intrinsic nature of Jeju, the other is discovering the fact that volcanic rock itself has become a part of glaze. Ultimately it shows expression of awareness of Jeju culture and identity of Jeju.
