Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of Elliott Carter's , a representative American composer of the 20th century. Music of the United States in 20th Century received great influences from several European composers who have found refuge in America after the World War II. As a result, various contemporary trends such as Impressionism, Neoclassicism, and Nationalism were developed. In this social context, Carter accepted the compositional techniques of contemporary composers, further extended the frequent changes and diversity of rhythm and tempo, and created his own system of harmony. The composed in 1995 is a composition that reveals his composition method very well. This thesis aims to research Carter's composition methods and to identify how his composition methods were developed in the . The Introduction examined other composers that have influenced Carter's music and concisely introduced five string quartets that he has composed. The main subject focuses on studying his composition methods which is the main focus of this thesis and using this as basis, analyzing the . The composition analysis is divided into each movements and focused on researching the rhythm and pitch studies. This piece is divided into twelve movements, being intricately interconnected without any whole rest between the movements. The introduction begins with all-interval tetrachord, revealing development for Carter's unique system of harmony through structural uses of his rhythm techniques such as cross meter and counterpoint rhythm. Through this thesis, it was clear that in the , Carter used his composition methods with moderation. This aspect was effectively developed throughout the entire movements and is depicted to have served a significant role in enabling the audience to understand this composition.
