연성조각의 조형적 표현에 관한 연구

Abstract

시대의 흐름과 함께 끊임없이 변천해온 미술은 2차 세계대전 이후 산업기술 및 과학문명의 발전과 더불어 자유롭고 도전적인 실험과 탐구정신으로 현대미술에 있어 확장된 개념과 양식으로 나타난다. 이러한 변화와 흐름에 맞춰 조각에서는 기존의 돌, 나무와 같이 단단하고 견고한 재료사용에서 벗어나 섬유, 연성플라스틱, 고무 등과 같은 부드러운 재료들이 등장하였다. 이러한 재료들은 우연에 의한 일상용품이라는 점과, 형태적으로 불확정적이라는 점에서 전통적인 조각의 개념의 틀을 깨뜨리며 표현양식에 있어 다양한 가능성을 제시하였다. 20세기 초 입체파에서 차용한 2차원의 콜라주와 앗상블라주를 시작으로 다다이즘의 레디메이드를 통해 등장한 3차원의 오브제는 마르셀 뒤샹의 (1916)을 시작으로 미술사 전반에 걸쳐 나타났으며, 팝아티스트 클래스 올덴버그를 중심으로 본격화 되었다. 클래스 올덴버그의 (1963)의 제목과 같이 그의 부드러운 느낌의 연작들은 '연성조각(Soft Sculpture)'이라는 개념을 형성하는데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 이러한 측면으로 볼 때 부드러운 소재의 등장은 회화에서 조각으로, 즉 평면에서 입체로의 확장을 보여주고 있으며 오늘날 현대미술에 있어 회화, 조각, 공예와 같은 예술 분야의 경계를 허물며 새로운 예술개념의 지평을 열었다. 이 연구는 19세기 이후에 발생한 예술이론들을 바탕으로 '연성조각'에 대한 개념과 전개과정을 살펴보고 연성조각의 조형적 특성을 파악하는데 목적을 두었다. 이에 본 연구자는 연성조각의 부드러운 성질을 우연적, 시간적, 공간적 특성을 바탕으로 크게 유연성, 가변성, 거대화로 나누어 연성조각의 구성 원리 및 조형 형태의 변화에 관하여 살펴보았다. Ⅳ장에서는 Ⅲ장에서 살펴 본 연성조각의 조형적 특성을 바탕으로 하여 부드러운 재료인 섬유, 연성플라스틱, 종이, 모피·가죽, 고무 등의 성질과 특성을 살펴보고, 이와 관련한 재료를 사용한 작가와 그 작품에 나타난 표현양식을 알아보았다. 더 나아가 현대미술에 있어 재료의 확장, 환경의 변화와 그에 따른 대중의 참여 및 설치 방법을 통하여 앞으로 새롭게 전개되어갈 방향을 모색하는데 그 의미를 두었으며, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 연성조각의 전개과정 및 작품들을 연구한 결과 산업기술과 과학문명의 발달로 나타난 소재들이 조각의 재료로 차용되어 당시 개방적이고 수용적이었던 사회적인 요소와 작가들의 창조적 의식 및 실험적 표현에 따른 새로운 개념들이 맞물려 나타난 새로운 미술장르임을 확인 할 수 있었다. 둘째, 연성재료들을 이용한 작품은 재료가 갖고 있는 특성으로 인해 중력 및 수력, 풍력 등과 같은 환경의 영향으로 형체가 고정되지 않고 시간의 흐름과 함께 유연하게 변화하는 가변적 성향을 갖고 있으며, 이러한 재료의 성질은 관람자로 하여금 시각 및 촉각의 경험으로 감각과 지각을 더욱 자유롭게 확장시키며 해석, 공유되어짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한 시각과 촉각으로 부드럽다는 것 외에도 이질적인 매체와도 유연하게 잘 융화되어 어떤 작품에도 용이하게 사용 될 수 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 셋째, 연성재료의 물질적 요소들은 다양한 기법과 활용, 지속적 탐구로 창의적 표현양식들을 보여주고 있으며, 더 나아가 확대된 공간 활용 및 환경과의 어울림으로 설치미술, 환경미술, 대지미술로의 확장을 보여주고 있다. 또한 작가와 대중들의 자연스러운 만남의 장을 마련하여 다양한 소통방식을 통해 관람양식의 변화를 가져왔음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같이 연성조각의 무한한 가능성과 잠재력은 많은 실험적 예술가들을 통해 확장되어 발전할 수 있는 환경을 마련하였으며, 오늘날 현대미술을 이해하는 데 예술사적으로 중요한 의미를 갖는다.

Art that has continuously been changed according to the passing of time has shown that concepts and styles expended in modern art with the development of industrial technology, scientific civilization, inquiring mind and free, challenging experiment after world war II. with the current of these changes, in field of sculpt, soft materials such as a fiber, brittle plastic and rubber appeared by getting out using solid materials like stones and branches. These materials suggest various potential by breaking thought of a box of traditional sculpt in the view of morphological indeterminacy and everyday supplies by accident. In the early of 20th centuries, a tree-dimensional object that appeared through readymade of dadaism originated from assemblage and two dimensional collage motivated from Cubism was shown in art history as a whole, becoming popular with pop artist, Class Oldenburg, as the center. His soft works like the name of Class Oldenburg (1963) had a key role as forming the concept of soft sculpt. In this respect, the appearance of soft materials shows the change from pictures to sculpt, to be more specific, it expands from flat surface to a tree-dimensional, removing the boundary among art field like painting, sculpt and opening a new respect in the concept of art expression. This study is aimed at comprehending formative characteristics of soft sculpt, process of development and concepts about soft sculpt based on art theory after 19th centuries. This researcher studied a constituting principle and the transformation of formative feature by separating soft features of soft sculpt into flexibility, variability and enlargement based on random, time, spatial characteristics. In chapter IV, it deals with the characteristics and properties of soft materials like fiber, soft plastic, paper, lather, rubber and so on based on formative characteristics of soft sculpt reviewed in chapter III. It examined artists using the materials having something to do with the soft materials and form of expression shown in the work. First, the result researching the working and processing of soft materials shows that various materials based on industrial technology and scientific civilization were used as a certain genre by following sculpt materials, which were presented as a new concept with open, respective, social factors and new concept by artist's creative ceremony and experimental expression at that time. Second, works using soft materials is not decided on a certain form by the environment factors such as gravity, water power and wind power due to characteristics of the material, which has variability with the passing of the time. These characteristics of materials can be interpreted and shared by increasing freely sense and perception through the experience of the sense of sight and touch. Also, it is found that soft materials can be easily available in any work by harmonizing with incompatible media. Third, material factors of soft materials show creative expression factors through a variety of ways, application and continuous researches, furthermore, expanded utilization of space and harmony with environment reveals that expanding to installation art, environment art and land art. Also it is found that not only does it allow artists and the public to meet themselves but also it made the change of view styles through a lot of communication. In this way, potential and infinitive possibility of soft sculpt helps lots of curious artists to develope their friends and soft sculpt has a key role in comprehending art-historically modern art.
