제주어 교육을 위한 제주전래동요와 제주어창작국악동요의 교육적 활용 방안 연구

Abstract

'제주어'는 제주 지역 전역에서 쓰는 제주인의 언어로 제주 사람의 삶과 문화가 응축되어 있는 소중한 문화유산이다. 특히, 훈민정음 창제 당시 한글의 고유한 형태를 간직하고 있어 옛 국어를 연구하는 데 중요한 자료로 꼽히기도 한다. 하 지만, 오랜 시간 동안 제주어를 대신하여 표준어가 널리 쓰이면서 일상생활에서 제주어를 모르더라도 큰 지장이 없게 되어 60대 이상의 할아버지, 할머니를 제외 하곤 제주어를 사용하는 세대가 점점 줄고 있는 실정이다. 이로 인해 '제주어'는 2010년 유네스코의 '소멸 위기의 언어' 5단계 중 4단계인 '아주 심각하게 위기에 처한 언어'로 분류되기도 했다. 이는 세대 간 소통의 단절을 의미하는 것이고, 제 주인의 삶이 응축된 문화가 사라진다는 것이다. 이에 따라 제주사회에서는 제주어의 보전과 활용 방안 마련을 위한 다양한 노력 들이 요구되고 있다. 도내 예술인들이 제주어를 창작 활동에 활용하여 제주어 노 래 작곡, 제주어 시집과 동화책 발간 등 적극적인 노력들을 하고 있고, 제주어의 보전과 활용 주체로 중요하게 다뤄지는 교육기관은 '제주어 말하기 대회'와 '제주어 노래 대회' 등을 개최하며 고군분투하고 있으나, 제주어교육과 관련된 연구물은 다른 연구물에 비해 미비한 실정이며 이러한 노력들이 아이들의 입에서 자연스럽 게 제주어가 구사될 수 있도록 하는 데까지 많은 영향을 미치지는 못하고 있다. 프랑스와 미국, 중국 등 다른 나라의 경우에는 교육과정에 지역어를 포함한다 는 내용과 소수민족의 지역어 사용 등에 대해 규정한 법을 제정하여 지역어 보존 에 앞장서고 있고, 제주특별자치도 또한 제주어 활성화 조례를 제정하여 다방면 에서 제주어 보존과 활용을 위해 애쓰고 있다. 언어가 사라진다는 것은 단순하게 언어유산이 없어지는 것이 아니라, 지구상의 모든 생물이 생태계의 한 부분을 차지하고 있는 것처럼, 나름대로 생활방식을 가 진 공동체 문화의 일부분을 잃는 것이다. 이러한 이유로 제주어 보존은 제주인들 의 삶과 문화, 역사를 지켜내는 일이자 제주인의 정체성을 지키는 일이다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 오랫동안 제주 지역에서 전승되어져 온 제주전래동요와 최근에 새롭게 만들어진 제주어창작국악동요를 활용한 제주어교육 방안을 연구 하여 제주어 보존과 활용에 도움을 주고자 다음과 같이 연구하여 제시하였다. 첫째, 2009개정교육과정 초등학교 3∼4학년 성취기준을 분석하여 제주어교육 을 위한 시수를 확보하고 교과별 통합 재구성 방안을 마련하였다. 각 차시별로 제주전래동요와 제주어창작국악동요의 지도 방법으로 나만의 제주어 사전 만들 기, 역할극, 공동체 놀이, 경로당 방문을 통한 제주어 조사활동 등 다양한 활동 속에서 제주어 학습이 흥미 있게 이루어 질 수 있도록 하였다. 둘째, 교과 외 시간을 이용한 교육적 활용 방안을 제시하였다. 모든 언어교육은 일상생활에서 타인과의 의사소통을 목적으로 한다. 그러기 위 해서는 단위학교 내에서 의도적으로 제주어를 말할 수 있는 구조적 시스템을 구 축할 필요가 있다. 충분한 중간놀이시간을 확보해주어 아이들이 제주어 노래를 부르며 신나게 놀 수 있도록 해주고, 제주어 동아리를 활성화하여 제주어를 활용 한 공연기획 및 제주어 문집 제작 등을 할 수 있도록 적극적인 지원이 필요하다. 본 연구는 제주어교육을 위한 제주전래동요와 제주어창작동요의 교육적 활용 방안 제시에 한정하였으므로 실제 수업 후 교육적 효과를 객관적으로 검증할 수 있는 실험 연구가 필요하다. 또한, 학교 여건과 교사의 능력을 고려하여 제주어 교육을 위한 다양한 교육과정 재구성 방안에 대한 연구도 필요하다.

Jeju language is a language that Jejuian residents use across the entire Jeju Province in which Jejuian's life and culture is condensed. Therefore, it is an important cultural heritage. Especially, the Jeju language has retained the inherent form of Hangul since the creation of Hunminjongum and thus serves as important material in studying old Korean language. Throughout the years, however, as use of standard Korean language became widespread, being unable to speak in the Jeju Language is no longer an inconvenience for Jejuians. Except for seniors over 60, fewer and fewer Jejuians are using the Jeju language. As such, UNESCO added the Jeju language to its Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger as a "critically endangered language," level four out of five in 2010. This indicates a lack of communication between generations and that a culture that contains Jejuian's lives is disappearing. In light of this situation, Jeju society is being asked to put efforts to preserve and promote the use of the Jeju language. Jejuian artists are incorporating the Jeju language in their creative activities by composing songs and writing poems and children's books utilizing the Jeju language. Educational institutions which are considered a principal agent in preserving the Jeju language are putting their best efforts by holding contests such as "Jeju Language Speaking Contest" and "Jeju Language Singing Contest." However, research on the Jeju Language is inadequate compared to other topics of study and these efforts are not leading to children naturally speaking the Jeju language. Other countries such as France, United States, and China are leading the way in preserving regional dialects by including them in school curriculums and have enacted laws that regulate the use of regional dialect by minority groups. Jeju Special Self-Governing Province enacted an ordinance that promotes use of the Jeju language and is striving to preserve and encourage use of the Jeju language. Extinction of a language doesn't merely mean a loss of a linguistic legacy but just as all creatures on the face of the earth make up the ecosystem, it means losing a part of a culture of community that has its own unique way of life. As such, preserving the Jeju language is protecting the life, culture, and identity of Jejuians. Therefore, in order to help preserve the Jeju language, this essay researched education methods that utilize Jeju traditional songs that have been passed down over generation in the Jeju Region and newly composed creative children's songs in Jeju language and suggests the following. First, the essay analyzes achievement standards of the amended curriculum of third and fourth grade students and presents a plan that incorporates Jeju language into other class subjects and secures class hours for Jeju language education. It presents a fun curriculum that includes activities such as making Jeju language dictionary, role playing, community games, and visiting senior citizens. Second, it presents a plan to utilize after school hour for Jeju language education. The objective of every language education is communication with others in daily life. In order to achieve this, each school unit is encouraged to establish a structured system that promotes speaking the Jeju language. This research is limited to suggestions of education methods for Jeju language that utilize Jeju traditional songs and creative children's songs in Jeju language. Therefore, objective assessments and experimentation of their educational effectiveness is required. Research on various curriculums for Jeju language considering school conditions and abilities of teacher is also needed.
