청소년 대상 동물보호교육 프로그램 실행연구

Abstract

본 연구는 현재 국내에서 실시 중인 동물보호교육의 문제를 파악하여 이에 대한 개선대안이 될 수 있는 동물보호교육 프로그램을 개발하고, 개발한 동물보호교육 프로그램을 현장에 적용하여 그 효과를 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 국내 동물보호교육 프로그램의 교재 및 동물보호교육 강사로서의 연구자의 경험을 분석하여 프로그램의 내용, 교육방법, 운영방법에서 개선이 필요한 부분을 파악하였다. 개선대안 프로그램으로 동물보호소에서 진행되는 청소년 대상 동물보호교육 프로그램을 개발하여 P시의 동물보호소에서 청소년 6명을 대상으로 이를 적용하였다. 적용 결과는 주제별로 분류하고 주요 사례를 추출하여 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국내 동물보호교육 프로그램의 내용, 교육방법, 운영방법의 현황과 문제점을 분석한 결과 내용 측면에서 동물보호교육 프로그램 교재에는 동물복지, 공감, 책임의 내용이 고르게 분배되어 있지만 실제 교육 현장에서는 내용이 균형 있게 다뤄지지 않았다. 교육방법 중 동물복지가 고려되지 않고 동물보호교육의 목적에 상충하는 직접체험방식으로 교육의 일부가 진행되는 문제가 있었다. 프로그램 운영방법에서는 교육이 초등학생과 수도권에 집중되어 있고, 학생들의 능동적인 로그램 참여가 어려우며 동물보호활동에 참여하고자 하는 학생들의 태도와 행동에 실질적인 변화를 이끌기에는 동물보호교육 프로그램의 시간과 자원이 부족하였다. 둘째, 파악된 문제의 개선대안으로 동물보호소의 봉사활동을 활용한 청소년 대상 동물보호교육 프로그램을 개발하였다. 프로그램은 총 8회기로, 각 회기는 마음 열기, 일반봉사활동, 특별활동, 강의와 토론, 마무리 단계로 구성되어 4시간 동안 진행된다. 마음 열기는 한 회기의 활동 일정과 활동 목표를 확인하는 과정이다. 일반봉사활동은 견사 청소나 동물에게 밥과 물주기 등 동물보호소의 일상적 업무에 도움을 주는 활동이다. 특별활동은 동물과의 상호작용을 통해 동물을 돌보고 소통하는 기술을 익히고 동물보호활동을 계획하고 실천하는 활동이다. 강의와 토론은 동물복지문제와 인간의 윤리적 의무, 생명존중에 대한 주제들을 배우고 의견을 나누는 과정이다. 마무리는 활동일지 작성을 통해 배운 점과 느낀점들을 정리하는 과정이다. 셋째, 개발된 동물보호교육 프로그램을 청소년들에게 적용하여 분석한 결과 청소년들은 동물보호 이슈와 동물 돌봄에 대한 지식을 습득하였고, 동물복지를 위한 선택을 하려는 마음을 갖게 되었다. 유기동물을 돌보는 활동에 참여하면서 보람과 즐거움을 느꼈고, 동물의 감정과 동물이 처한 상황에 공감하였다. 프로그램은 청소년의 능동적인 동물보호교육 참여 기회가 되었고 참여자의 점진적인 태도와 행동의 변화를 지원하였다. 결과에 기초하여 본 연구를 통해 개발 및 적용된 청소년 대상 동물보호교육 프로그램은 국내 동물보호교육 프로그램 문제점의 대안으로서 실현 가능성 있는 교육 프로그램이며, 동물보호교육의 목적을 충족하며 청소년에게 긍정적인 변화를 주었다고 결론지을 수 있다. 본 연구는 청소년을 위한 동물보호교육 프로그램 구현의 시작단계로서 차후 프로그램의 현장 실현을 위해서 동물보호교육 프로그램 교사의 양성, 프로그램 홍보, 학교나 청소년 센터 등 다양한 교육기관과의 협력 진행을 제안하는 바이다.

The objective of this study was to develop animal welfare education program as an improved alternative to an ongoing animal welfare education and to evaluate the result of the developed animal welfare education program through field application. In order to achieve the objective, this study examined areas that need improvements among contexts of the program, education methods, and operation methods based upon teaching materials of domestic animal welfare education program and an experience as animal welfare education instructor. As for the improved alternative program, adolescents animal welfare education program which has been utilized at an animal shelter was developed and applied to six adolescents in an animal shelter of P city. The outcome of the application was sorted by topic, and major cases were extracted and analyzed. The result of the study was as follows. First, even though the teaching material of the ongoing domestic Animal Welfare Education program had evenly distributed the content of animal welfare, empathy, and responsibility, the program did not value them equally on a practical educational field. Among educational methods, those 'direct experience methods' that solely focus on arousing interest without concerning animal welfare had to be replaced with 'indirect experience method' due to its discrepancy in purpose of Animal Welfare Education. Among operation methods, targets for the education was focused on capital area, students were passive through the process, and there were insufficient time and resources from animal welfare education program to bring practical changes on students' attitude and behavior. Second, 8-session animal welfare education program for adolescents which contains a general service like cleaning animal shelter, specialized service such as taking care of animals and completing 'loving animal project' and lessons which adolescents can learn and share their opinions about animal welfare was developed. Third, the result analysis of the program application showed that the developed program provided adolescents an opportunity to actively participate in animal welfare activities, and it became an unique experience to acquire knowledge on animal welfare issue and care, cultivate ethical citizenship, and feel empathy for other creature as well as joy and satisfaction. In conclusion, animal welfare education program for adolescent contributed to an advance of adolescent's understanding and attitude on animal, and had a potential to be an alternative to problems of existing animal welfare education program. Being an initiative stage of implementing animal welfare education program for adolescent, it is recommended to have a follow up study incorporating revision and supplementation through practices and reflections in various educational fields.
