Abstract

During the modernization process, there have been the irregular changes in the architectural patterns in Jeju. So, this study is designed to analyze the architectural elements in traditional houses located in Jeju, which need to be passed down to the next generations, compile the changes in the architectural patterns and derive the elements which can be applied to the modern architecture and the spatial and compositional shapes of houses in Jeju. This study focuses on the characteristics of traditional houses in Jeju and finds out any elements which can be reflected on the modern housing plan in Jeju to suggest the model for the future. Although up to now, there have been the theoretical studies on the traditions found in the traditional houses in Jeju and the references on the necessity of architecture through the reflection of elements, there have not been the descriptions on the detailed factors and the alternatives. The reflection of the architectural locality is to show the compatibility between design and materials and the degree of expression based on the regional environment and culture and the maximum traditional factors. Therefore, it is required to look for the creative approaches by which the matters above can be reinterpreted in various ways and expect the evolution of the design which can express the developmental locality. It would be impossible to accurately define what is the reflection of the characteristics of traditional houses for ordinary people in Jeju on the modern architecture. But, it would be expressed when a certain building is constructed in the future. It can be said that our understanding of the characteristics would help them to be reflected on the modern houses.
