A Comparative Study on the Usage of Presupposition in English and Korean
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to recognize the difference of the presupposition usage between English and Korean, is to enhance the understanding of presupposition features in two languages and furthermore, is to use the presupposition effectively in our everyday life.
In this purpose, Chapter two gives a discussion on the historical background, the definition, and characteristics of the presupposition. Chapter three examines the presupposition-triggers in English. The presupposition-triggers are classified into two categories. One is to semantically trigger the presupposition, the other is to pragmatically trigger it. First, in the semantic-presupposition triggers, factive verbs, implicative verbs, change of state verbs, iteratives, verbs of judging are presented as lexical presupposition-triggers; definite descriptions, temporal clauses, cleft sentences, implicit clefts with stressed constituents, comparisons and contrasts, non-restrictive relative clauses, counterfactual conditionals are presented as syntactic presupposition-triggers. Second, in the pragmatic-presupposition triggers, questions and imperatives are presented. Chapter four examines the presupposition-triggers in Korean and compares with those in English. Also the presupposition-triggers are classified into two categories: semantic-presupposition triggers and pragmatic-presupposition triggers. First, in the semantic-presupposition triggers, factive verbs, change of state verbs, and iteratives are presented as lexical presupposition-triggers; particles and gerund final endings as morphological presupposition-triggers; cleft sentences and temporal clauses as syntactic presupposition-triggers. In Korean, morphological presupposition-triggers are especially specific feature which differs from English. Also, there are some differences between Korean and English in favtive verb 'know' and iterative. Second, in the pragmatic-
presupposition triggers, honorific-rule expressions, questions and imperatives are presented. Honorific-rule expressions are essential components to trigger pragmatic presupposition in Korean and it is the feature that differ from English. Chapter five examines the presupposition defeasibility and projection problem in complex sentences. There are some differences between English and Korean in denying one's own presupposition and plugs(verbs of propositional attitude, verbs of saying).
