A Study on Book Publication in Jeju Region in the Late Joseon Period
Abstract
This study analyzed the catalogs of wood printing blocks for each period in Jeju region and the characteristics by the types of books published in Jeju in the Joseon period, and examined the characteristics of books published in Jeju through the operation of wood printing block archive and publication-related activities. The purpose of this study is not to perform an analysis that simply lists wood printing block catalogs, but to confirm that, although Jeju region had a somewhat poor publication environment, it did not fall behind in the capabilities and trends of book publication at that time, and to identify the relationship between specific book publication and Jeju region.
First, the records of distributing books or ordering wood printing block-making in Jeju, focusing on 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 and historical geographies of Joseon counties, were organized for each period. As a result, it can be seen that Jeju region requested books from the central government as it lacked books, and the ones that they requested were mostly Confucian books. Although the central government sometimes ordered other provincial offices to print books to be sent to Jeju region, it made Jeju region to directly engrave and print autopsy report format in the 21st year of King Sejong's reign, and this suggests that Jeju had the publication technology at that time.
The catalogs of books and wood printing blocks in Jeju region of the Joseon period included in approximately ten literatures were analyzed by period and type. The result shows that, in Jeju region of the Joseon period, there were various types of wood printing blocks during the 16th to 19th centuries, and those were mostly related to Confucianism. Jeju region received Confucian books such as the Four Books in the 17th year of King Sejong's reign from the central government in the 15th century, and continued to receive them until the 17th century. Over the 16th to 19th centuries, there were a large number of books on Confucianism in Jeju region. In the 18th to 19th centuries, the number of wood printing blocks and extant editions of publications increased compared to the 15th to 17th centuries. This seems to have been related to the central government's policy of spreading Confucianism in the 18th to 19th century and the process that the order of Neo-Confucianism was established in Jeju region at that time.
Various types of wood printing blocks about military strategy, medicine, and literature are found together with wood printing blocks about Confucianism. There remain 10 Jeju wood printing block catalogs about military strategy. Among them, the extant edition of the 『
Huang Shigong Sushu (military strategy book written by Huang Shigong during the Qing Dynasty period)』 is the oldest of the military strategy books published the Joseon period. The fact that the oldest military strategy book remains in Jeju region and multiple wood printing blocks and books about military strategy are found suggests that military strategy books were deemed important in Jeju region at that time. There is 『Sinpyeonjibseong Mauibang Uuibang (newly compiled veterinary manual regarding the diseases of cattle and horses』, an extant edition of a medical book published in Jeju region, suggesting that Jeju region also printed the book by itself. Although this book is a professional medical book, when examining the purpose of the publication of the book at the time, it indicates the military importance of cattle and horses in Jeju region. There are 10 wood printing blocks regarding a collection of literary works, and there remain three cases of the provincial governor's publication of a collection of literary works. They are the publications of a collection of literary works focusing on people involved in a private relationship with the provincial governor, rather than a preferential selection of a collection of literary works written by figures from the region under his jurisdiction.
Finally, this study examined the characteristics of book publication in Jeju region in the late Joseon period through the operation of wood printing block archive and publication-related activities. When judging from the location and status of wood printing block archive in Jeju region of the Joseon period, the storage environment for wood printing blocks was not very good. However, the level of publication technology can be assumed based on the operation of wood printing block archive, its own production of paper, and the existence of paper craftsmen and wood printing block craftsmen. It is also found that wood printing blocks of diverse characteristics such as military strategy, medicine, literary works, and divination as well as Confucianism were constantly engraved for specific purposes during the 15th to 19th centuries.
As mentioned above, this study examined the catalogs of wood printing blocks recorded during the 15th to 19th centuries, the colophon and text of the extant edition published in Jeju region, the operation of wood printing block archive, its own production of paper, and the existence of paper craftsmen and wood printing block craftsmen. In conclusion, it can be assumed that the publication activities in Jeju region of the Joseon period were steadily conducted reflecting the trends, despite a somewhat poor publication environment.
