A Study on Teaching and Learning Method for Jeju Local History Class under the Middle School History Education Curriculum
Abstract
Although the interest in history education is growing more than ever before, the history subject taught in the field of education are still perceived as a memorization-oriented and a much burdened subject. One way to teach history to students more effectively and enhance their interest in it is by teaching a local history that enables them to learn the history of the area close to their life circle and culture easily accessible to them. However, as students are taking history class in schools using the identical textbook regardless of the area they live in and history classes are focused on preparing for the college scholastic ability test, it is difficult for them to learn the contents of the local history.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the contents of the existing local history class under the history education curriculum in middle school, to analyze the description and amount of contents regarding Jeju's local history included in the present middle school history textbooks, and to suggest a teaching method for the students' learning of Jeju's local history during class and field experience. The goals of education curriculums and ideal human characters have changed over time. In particular, the trend of globalization has been highlighted in terms of the recognition of history. It is a matter for regret that the contents regarding the local history are not taking up a great deal of weight and even if the local history is mentioned, it is mentioned without a specific purpose or goal. In order to comprehensively understand various histories and cultures, it is desirable to learn the contents of the local history first.
The current middle school history textbooks do not include much description related to Jeju. The major description related to Jeju includes prehistoric ruins, the Resistance of Sambyeolcho, and the April 3rd Jeju Uprising. The amount and aspect of their description of the same topic differed by textbook. Thus, it is highly likely that students in Jeju will have far fewer opportunities to learn the local history they are experiencing if they take the history class with the current textbooks alone. Regarding this problem, this study suggests various classes that fit the characteristics of each topic as learning methods linked with textbooks such as group survey and presentation class, flipped learning, dramatization in class, history newspaper making, Havruta learning, class using video data, field trip, subject exploration and discussion class, and class using historical attached maps. The interest in the learning of local history can be enhanced by field exploration other than class using textbook.
This study started with the question, 'What is the best way to make students who have lost interest in history class become interested in history class and history subject?' It is concluded that, in order to stop depending on the textbook-oriented class only, it is necessary to have local history class, which can enhance students' interest and allow students to learn beyond the contents of textbook. It is also necessary to increase the amount of description of Jeju in textbooks and to link a teaching method with the textbooks so that Jeju's historical and cultural resources can be broadly utilized as educational materials. Moreover, schools, teachers and communities should change to recognize the need for the learning of local history, which can lead to more effective learning of students.
