Abstract

When the main character Seulgi visited his grandpa in Moseulpo, he discovers strang caves on the cliff of Songaksan Mountain. As the caves caught Seulgi's attention, he asks Grandpa about the caves. He learns that the Japanese soldiers forced Jeju people to build the cave in order to fight against the US military during the Japanese colonial rule. But also, Seulgi learns that during the period many Jeju people had to live in poor condition, were despised and forced to do harsh labors. As Seulgi learns about the sad history of Jeju Island, he encounters a Japanese man named 'Nakamura', who has come to meet Seulgi's dad, and finds out another shocking secret. When the Japanese soldiers retreated from Manchuria, they brought with them gold that they have stolen. However, when the Japanese were defeated in the war, they could not take the gold with them and had to bury them in Jeju. Rumors say that a Japanese leader forced the Jeju people to dig a hole to hide the gold and killed them all. The map that Mr. Nakamura had brought with him marked where the gold was. The story comes to an end by finding out more about the sad histories of Jeju Island and how the people were tortured by the Japanese. And in the end, Grandpa tells Seulgi the secret about the caves that he had been hiding for the past 50 years.
