A Consideration of"Rakubaishu"by Toson Shimazaki : With a focus on 'The Chikuma River Sketches'from A Revised and Enlarged Collection of Toson Works
Abstract
KimToson Shimazaki released his works in four collections over a span ofapproximately five years, including "Wakanashu"(1897), "Hitohabune"(1898), "Natsukusa"(1898), and "Rakubaishu"(1901). This paper reviews"Rakubaishu" responding to the belief that this is consideredhis 'interim' publication which was created when his writing focuschanged from romantic poetryto naturalisticnovels.Specifically, eight poems under the sectionof'Chikumakawa ryozonouta'from"Rakubaishu" were selectedfrom Teiseizohotosonshishu(1917), the 3rdcompilation of the afore-mentioned four collections. The eight poems were written from November 1899 to June 1902 when the writercreated his last works as a poet and prepared a new career as a novelist. To review the works, this paper researchesthe origin of the title "Rakubaishu" and the process of newlysectioning 'Chikumakawa ryozonouta' in Teisei zohotoson shishu. The poems released as 'Chikumakawa ryozonouta' are presentedin a different order than they were created. This paper assertsthat thisdifference in theordering of the collection ofpoemsreflected the subtle change in the author's state of mind. The paper also identifiesseveral examples of thatchange using the imagery within the poems.Another point was madein this paperthat the eight poems revealed achange in the poet's verse styleand his poetic sentiment.Of the eight poems, 'Komoro naru kojo no hotori' and 'Chikumagawa no hodori nite' reflect the author's far-sighted view of life after losing the passion he had fromhis youthhoodwhen he published "Wakanashu".The poet sangabout the transiennatureof life in the two poems, with the poetic sentiment in the narrative differentfrom his earlier works. In another work titled 'Rodou', the author observed the exhausting life of farmers in his time. The poem portrayed the lives of farmers who collectedfruits by adapting themselves to the unpredictable natureof farm life. The poem showed his admiration fortheir hard workwith focus on the pleasure they receive in return for their toil and moil. The poemtook a prose-like format, deviating from the formal five-line-seven-syllable format. In 'Tokiwagi',the authorlikened an evergreen tree'sinvincible determination and spiritto that ofahero. In this way, he reflected a hero's inner solitude and tragedy and accepted them as his fate. It is noticeable that the author experimentally attempted a newand experimentalliterary path by the free verse in this poem, which consists of 39 lines without a stanza.'Sekiryo' is a poem where the author attempted to sublime his deep-rooted loneliness and born out of solitude to an ordeal for creation. It is also an experimental work as he structured the work into a long poem with nine stanzas and 141 lines. In 'Rohen', the writer contemplated the universal agony of lifeby depicting the lives of Komoro mountain villagers and their fatalistic attitude of accepting the hardships without complaint. The subtitle of the work, 'An Impromptu Prose Poem,'implies the author's new career as aprosaist, specifically anovelist. The review of Toson Shimazaki'sworks led to the conclusion that the writer made different attempts to express his thoughts and sentiments in his works. To effectively achieve the goal, he actively used Chinese characters and diversified his poetic meters. 'Rakubaishu' possesses a greatsignificance in that the poet developed his novelist career,
