Abstract

When the Cultural Revolution was over, China was entering a new era, changing society as a whole. Since 1978, China has taken a path of reform and openness, pursuing modernizing socialism. In 1981, contemporary writer Lu Yao created a novel called 'Rensheng' based on society at the time and published it in 1982. In this work, he explored changes in lifestyle, values, and moral ideas at the time of the opening of the reform and opening in the story of the rural knowledge youths at the intersection of urban and rural areas. Through this work, the author shows the confusion of the values of rural intellectuals and the problems of discrimination between urban and rural areas. In this paper, I would like to examine why rural youth in the early years of reform and opening attempted to enter the city, and why the author advised the values that make the rural life positive in the early 1980s. Prior to that, I analyzed the main characters: rural knowledge youth Gao Jialin, rural woman Liu Qiaozhen, urban woman Huang Yaping, and rural old man Deshun. Then I analyzed why Gao Jialin was trying to enter the city. In addition to the meaning of the city for rural youths like Gao Jialin, I looked for the reason through the gap between rural and urban areas. Finally, I looked at life philosophy and advice that the author gave through Deshun, and analyzed why the author spoke positively about living in the countryside to a young man whose entry into the city was not successful in the early 1980s when reform and opening were just begun.
