A Study on the Social Movement of Kim Mun-jun during the Japanese colonial period
Abstract
Jeju Island had been blocked from outside for more than 200 years because of embargo by the Joseon's governmental policy. Since the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876(Treaty of Ganghwa), the people of Jeju experienced drastic changes through exchanges with other regions. It was the young intellectuals who studied modern scholarship and the Jeju people who went to Japan for employment, education, and anti-Japanese movements. Kim Mun-jun, who is discussed in this study, is one of the leaders of this change in Jeju. He was born in 1894 in Jocheon-ri, Jeju and received modern education in Jeju and Suwon. He had a great turning point through 1919 3‧1 Movement, the Jocheon Manse Movement. He established private schools which included night schools and village schools and worked hard on youth activities in Jeju until he moving to Osaka in Japan in July 1927. Then in July 1927, he moved to Osaka and began his activities based on Jeju residents in Japan who had established settlements since the opening of Jeju-Osaka regular route in 1923. Since September 1927, he served as an executive in 'The Joseon Labor Union in Osaka' under 'The Joseon Workers League in Japan(Joseon nodong chongdongmaeng in Japan)', leading various social movements and led the activities of the New Trunk Society(Singanhoe). In addition, he formed 'The Rubber workers Union' with about 1,000 members in 1929 and joined the 'Japanese Labor Union National Council' under 'The Japanese Communist Party' in 1930. Kim Mun-jun, arrested while preparing for labor disputes in 1930, was released in 1934, and helped to communicate among the Korean people living in Kobe, Kyoto and Osaka by publishing "MINJUNGSIBO" in 1935. He died in Japan on May 22, 1936, and after Korea's liberation, he was recognized for his work in Japan for battling against Japanese imperialism. This study deals with modern education courses he received. and through reviewing his educational movement in Jeju since the March 1919 movement, I researched the changes in his social awareness. Besides I looked at why he moved to Japan and started a social movement, in the middle of education in Jeju. then post-liberation activities of those who were influenced by Kim or his colleagues. In this study, it can be covered only a portion of Kim Mun-Jun's life and thought. In order to fully understand the influence of his ideas and social movements, from now on, it is necessary to review Jeju people's social movement in Japan and the relationship between activists from Jeju and also need to look into all policy changes in Jeju-do during the Japanese colonial rule. This social movement research of the Jeju people during the Japanese colonial period will enable us to grasp the relationship between 'the Jeju people in Japan' and the Jeju's social movements. It is also expected to be useful for the background study of 'The Jeju 4.3 incident' after the liberation.
