한국 다큐멘터리의 제작에 관한 연구

Abstract

다큐멘터리는 인간의 삶의 질과 사회 변화를 위한 메시지를 제시하면서 방송사마 다 중요한 프로그램으로 제작되어 오고 있다. 한국방송대상은 1973년 이후 매년 제작된 다큐멘터리를 대상으로 우수작을 선정하여 수여된다. 본 연구에서는 전체 267편의 수상작들을 중심으로 시대별로 다큐멘터리의 기능과 장르, 주제별로 특성 을 분석하였다. 또한 한국방송대상을 수상한 15명의 PD들을 심층 인터뷰 하여 프 로그램 제작과정 및 완성도 향상을 위한 제작 전략 등을 파악하였다. 연구결과, 다큐멘터리의 기능적 관점에서 한국 다큐멘터리는 초창기의 선전적 기 능을 거쳐 탐사적 기능과 관찰적 기능이 주류를 이루다, 최근에는 대안적 기능이 강조되면서 시대적 상황에 맞춰 변화해오고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 장르에 따른 다 큐멘터리의 기능에서는 전반적으로 정책 다큐멘터리를 제외한 모든 다큐멘터리 장 르에서 탐사보도기능이 가장 높게 나타난 반면, 시사 다큐멘터리와 역사 및 문화 다큐멘터리를 제외한 나머지 다큐멘터리 장르에서는 대안적 기능이 나타나지 않았 다. 정책 다큐멘터리의 경우에는 유일하게 선전기능만 확인되었다. 장르별 세부주제를 분석한 결과, 시사 다큐멘터리에서는 사회 관련 주제가 가장 많이 다루어졌고, 이어 시사종합, 국제, 경제, 정치, 교육, 문화 순으로 높게 나타났 다. 휴먼 다큐멘터리의 세부주제를 살펴본 결과, 전체적으로 장애인, 다문화 가정, 소년소녀가장 등 특수대상을 다룬 다큐멘터리가 가장 많이 등장했고, 이어 일반인 중심, 영웅 중심, 휴먼종합 순으로 높게 나타났다. 자연 다큐멘터리의 세부주제에서 는 환경 중심 주제가 가장 많았으며, 이어 자연 중심, 인간 중심 순으로 높게 나타 났다. 과학 다큐멘터리에서는 의학 주제를 다룬 다큐멘터리가 가장 많았으며, 이어 인간, 동식물, 첨단기술, 지구천문학 순으로 많이 등장했다. 역사 다큐멘터리의 경우 에는 유물/유적 중심, 사건 중심 주제를 다룬 경우가 가장 많았고, 이어 영웅 중심, 일반인 중심 순으로 높게 나타났다. 문화 다큐멘터리에서는 전통문화를 다룬 수상 작이 가장 많았으며, 이어 기행, 음악, 대중문화, 미술, 종교 순으로 많이 등장했다. 정책 다큐멘터리에서는 반공 주제가 가장 많이 다뤄졌으며, 이어 새마을, 정책 홍 보, 정권 홍보 순으로 높게 나타났다. 15명의 PD를 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시한 결과에서는, 1960년대부터 시작된 다큐멘터리들은 주로 정부의 홍보 차원의 주제인 반공, 새마을, 국가 정책 홍보에 관한 작품들이 제작되었다. 휴먼 다큐멘터리는 당시 보통사람에 대해 높은 관심을 보였던 사회적 분위기와 ENG 카메라의 등장으로 지극히 사적인 개인의 영역을 가 장 내밀하게 휴머니즘의 진수를 표현해 낼 수 있었다고 평가되었다. 자연 다큐멘터 리의 경우에는 작품의 완성도를 위해 편집 단계의 구성 전략이 매우 중요하다는 것 이 강조되었다. 즉, 주입식 구성으로는 실패할 가능성이 높기 때문에 사람들로 하여 금 스스로 궁금증이나 지적 호기심을 자아내도록 유도하여 몰입할 수 있는 장치를 마련해야 한다는 것이다. 시사 다큐멘터리는 사람들에게 실질적인 도움이 되면서 PD가 세상에 던지는 화두가 뚜렷한 주제를 기반으로 제작되어야 한다고 보았다. 이에 따라 어려운 주제를 쉽고 감성적이면서 사례 중심적으로 풀어내어 사람들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 구성하고 편집하는 전략이 요구된다고 강조했다. 문화 다큐 멘터리의 경우에는 현장에 강한 전문가들로 연출자와 스텝들을 보강해야 한다는 필 요성이 강조되었고, 다큐멘터리를 세계로 수출할 수 있는 제작환경의 변화가 두드 러졌다. 과학 다큐멘터리는 과학에 대한 사람들의 지적 호기심과 갈증을 해소시켜 줌으로써 로고스적 욕망을 채워주는 즐거움이 있다고 강조했다. 전반적으로 주제적 인 측면이나 구성적인 측면에서 방송사들은 나름대로의 전략을 가지고 치열하게 경 쟁하고 있으며, 이는 다큐멘터리의 발전에도 기여하고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 전반적으로 한국방송대상 수상작에 대한 내용분석과 다큐멘터리 장르별 한국방송 대상을 수상한 제작 PD들을 대상으로 한 심층 인터뷰를 통해 한국 다큐멘터리의 특성을 통시적으로 파악하고, 각 장르별 제작 전략을 살펴볼 수 있었다.

Documentary has been produced as an important program for every broadcasting company, offering a message for the quality of human life and social change. Korean Broadcasting Awards will be awarded to selected documentaries that have been produced annually since 1973.In this study, the characteristics of documentary 's function, genre, and theme were analyzed by period, focusing on the 267 award winners. In addition, we interviewed 15 PDs who won the Korean Broadcasting Grand Prix and deeply interviewed them to understand the program making process and the production strategy for improving the program completion. As a result of the study, from the functional point of view of documentary, Korean documentary has main function of exploration function and observation function through early propagandistic function. Recently, alternative function has been emphasized and developed according to the situation of the time.In documentary function according to genre, overall documentary genre except policy document has the highest exploration report function, while documentary genre has no alternative function except for current documentary and historical and cultural documentary. In the case of policy documentaries, only promotional functions were confirmed. In the subject of current affairs documentary, social issues were treated most, followed by current affairs, international, economics, politics, education and culture.As a result of examining the details of the human documentary, documentaries covering special subjects such as disabled people, multicultural families, and boys and girls were the most popular, followed by the public, the hero, and the human. In the subject of the natural documentary, the theme of the environment was the most, followed by the nature center and the human center. In the science documentary, documentaries covering medical topics were the most common, followed by humans, plants and animals, advanced technology, and earth astronomy. In the case of historical documentaries, it was mostly related to relics / historical sites, event-oriented themes, followed by heroic and general people. In the cultural documentary, the most award-winning works dealing with traditional culture were followed by travel, music, pop culture, art and religion. In the policy documentary, anti-communism topics were treated the most, followed by Saemaul, policy promotion, and government promotion. As a result of the in – depth interviews with 15 PDs, documentaries started from the 1960s mainly consisted of works on anti – communism, The human documentary was evaluated to be able to express the essence of humanism in the most intimate personal area with the social atmosphere and ENG camera that showed high interest in ordinary people at the time. In the case of a natural documentary, it was emphasized that the composition strategy of the editing stage is very important for the completeness of the work. In other words, because of the high possibility of failure in the injection type configuration, people should be able to induce their curiosity and intellectual curiosity and provide a device that can immerse themselves. The current documentary has shown that PD should be produced on the basis of a clear subject matter that will be given to the world as a practical help to people. He emphasized that a strategy to solve difficult topics easily, emotionally and case-centrally and to organize and edit them so that people can easily understand them is required. In the case of cultural documentaries, it was emphasized that the need to reinforce the directors and staff with strong experts in the field, and the production environment that can export the documentary to the world was remarkable. The science documentary emphasized the pleasure of fulfilling the logistic desire by eliminating people's intellectual curiosity and thirst for science. Overall, broadcasters are fiercely competing with their own strategies in terms of thematic and constructive aspects, and this has been confirmed to contribute to the development of documentaries. In general, we analyzed the content of the Korean Broadcasting Grand Prize and deeply interviewed the producers who won the Grand Prize for Korean Broadcasting by documentary genre, and were able to understand the characteristics of Korean documentary and to examine the production strategies for each genre.
