Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide useful implications for the establishment of the relationship with the local residents and the activation of local economy by analysing the relationship among the local residents' perception of the impact of, attitude, and support for the complex resort casino. This study, in addition, investigated the differences in the perception of tourism impacts by the demographic characteristics of the residents in the survey area and attempted to propose strategies to cope with the identified concrete profiles. The subjects were the residents of Jeju area, which is effected by a issue of developing complex resort development and their attitude and support toward the development of the complex resort casino. The hypotheses were tested by statistical analysis after completing the verification of reliability. First, for the hypothesis 1, the perception of the complex casino industry impact was shown to have effect on the residents' attitude where the positive economic and sociocultural effect had significant positive effects and negative sociocultural and environmental effects had negative effects. Second, the attitude of local residents toward casino industry was shown to have significant positive effect on the support, a specific willingness to act. The results of additional analysis for the differences in the perception of tourism impacts by the demographic characteristics of the residents showed significant differences in the perception of negative sociocultural and environmental effects by sex and of positive economic, sociocultural, and environmental effects and negative economic, sociocultural, and environmental ones by age groups. For the educational level, no significant difference in the perception of impact was observed and for the resident areas. The difference in residential areas led to significant differences in positive economic effect and negative sociocultural and environmental ones and the difference in jobs led to significant differences in positive economic and sociocultral effects and negative sociocultural one. The implications of the results are as follows: First, the establishment of positive relationship with local residents is essential for the development of complex resort casio. Second, the specific effects of tourism industry and the specific measures to prevent problems should be offered. The active attention by and support from national and local governments are necessary to develop the multi-resort casino. Finally, for the results of this study to be more useful, additional in-depth analysis of the perception of and attitude of the local residents toward the casino industry, a detailed approach to the segmented subjects, and the explanation of the differences based on various case studies are recommended.
