제주도 특수신본풀이의 성격과 의미

Abstract

이 논문은 제주도 특수신본풀이의 성격과 의미를 밝힌다. 특수신본풀이는 본풀이의 정체가 명확히 규정되지 않은 채 '특수본풀이'라는 이름으로 지칭된 연구사의 결함이 있다. 그렇기 때문에 이 연구에서는 특수신본풀이가 무엇을 지칭하는지 특수신본풀이의 구체적인 예증 자료를 통하여 해명하는 귀납적인 방법을 통하여 사실 확인을 하고자 하였다. 구체적 예증의 결과로 특수신본풀이에서 특수신이 이승으로 대표되는 곳과 이승 너머를 오가는 여정을 공통적으로 담고 있으며 그것이 핵심 서사임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 특징은 특수신이 이곳과 저곳을 매개하는 역할을 하여 분리된 이곳과 저곳이 화합할 수 있음을 보여준다. 이를 '경계 넘어서기'라고 하여 공통 항목을 설정하고 이것의 서사적 내용, 특수신본풀이의 세계관적 기저 등을 탐구한 것이 이 논문의 구체적인 목표이다. 이 논문은 특수신본풀이의 대상과 범주, 민담과 공유하는 서사, 특수신본풀이의 제의적 성격, 특수신본풀이의 순환적 세계관의 순서로 살펴보았다. 특수신본풀이의 대상은 , , , 다. 이들 본풀이들은 정해진 체계 없이 공통적으로 삶과 죽음의 소통에 대하여 이야기한다. 특수신본풀이는 원초적이고 생명력이 태동하는 미분화성을 기초로 한다. 특수신은 주신이 아닌 주변부의 신으로 여겨지나 이러한 주변부는 확장된 주변을 뜻하며 제주도 본풀이의 심층부를 상징한다. 특수신본풀이는 민담과 서사를 공유하는 특징을 보여준다. 상호 이해를 바탕으로 한 미분화성은 신화와 민담이 공유하는 사유이기에 특수신본풀이의 서사로도 또한 민담의 서사로도 남을 수 있었다. 제주도를 제외한 다른 지역에서 신화의 모습을 찾을 수 없으나 신화와 민담이 같은 근원을 가지고 있으며 서로 영향을 주고받으며 양립하여 존재하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 특수신본풀이의 제의적 성격은 시왕맞이 제의와 관련성을 가지고 있었다. 특수신은 죽음과 밀접하게 연관되기에 의 신들과 성격을 공유하면서 시왕당클에 모셔지는 신들의 부신(demi-deity)적 성격을 띤다. 와 는 석살림에 흔적을 남기고, 는 에 삽입되어서 구연되며, 는 군병질침에 그 흔적을 남겼다. 본풀이가 현장에서 사라지는 위기에 처하였기에 제의적 흔적을 통하여 본풀이의 의미를 재구해 보고자 하였다. 특수신본풀이의 세계관은 무가, 이난나신화·길가메쉬 서사시와 세계관을 공유한다. 특수신본풀이에서 나와 타인의 경계를 무너뜨리고 이곳과 저곳을 환치시킴으로써 탈경계적 사유체계를 확인할 수 있기에 이를 통하여 특수신본풀이의 의의를 찾고자 하였다. 특수신은 인간이 가기 힘든 여정을 지속하고 완수하기 위하여 다른 존재들과 묻고 답하면서 자신이 알지 못하는 길을 탐색한다. 이러한 과정은 분리되어 있는 경계를 허물어뜨려 인간과 미물, 영혼까지 소통하게 만든다. 특수신본풀이의 배경에 해당하는 공간의 존재 양상은 서로 나뉘어 있으면서 화합하는 형태를 지니고 있고 이러한 경계면 위에 특수신이 존재한다. 인물들이 이동한 공간은 서로 다른 특성을 지닌다. 이러한 공간이 서로 일정한 관련성을 지니고 있으며 이는 상극상생으로 이해할 수 있다. 특수신본풀이의 인물들이 보여주는 바는 삶과 죽음이 혼재되어 있는 우리 일상의 삶을 바탕으로 하기에 일상적이면서 근원적이라 할 수 있고, 우리가 공감할 수 있는 철학이다.

This study intends to identify the characteristics and meanings of Jejudo's Teuksusin-bonpuri(ritual songs with special narratives). Teuksusin-bonpuri has also been referred to as "Teuksu-Bonpuri" while "bonpuri" has not been clearly defined yet. Therefore, this study first clarified what the term "Teuksu sin-bonpuri" means based on various sources on it. This genre of Korean ritual songs is commonly characterized by its narrative on special deities' travel between a place representing this world and another symbolizing the next world. This characteristic suggests that special deities are the beings playing the role of mediating different spaces, promoting the unity, and harmony of the two separate worlds. This study examined the subjects and the classification of Teuksusin-bonpuri, its narratives shared with folk tales, its ritual nature, and the cyclical worldview represented in it. Teuksusin-bonpuri includes "Woncheongang Bonpuri," "Seminhwangje Bonpuri," "Heogungaegi Bonpuri," and "Samdugumi Bonpuri." All these songs sing about the communication between life and death without commonly fixed form or style. The most remarkable feature of special deities lies in an undifferentiated state where primitive, vital force comes from. Special deities are not major gods but deities in peripheries, which, however, can be considered as extended realms and thus symbolizes the depths represented in Jeju bonpuri. Another characteristic of Teuksusin-bonpuri is that it shares narratives with some folk tales. The undifferentiated state based on mutual understanding is an idea commonly found in myths and folk tales. Therefore, it has been incorporated into the narratives of Teuksusin-bonpuri as well as folk tales. In Korea, myths are not found in regions other than Jeju; but myths and folk tales share the same origin and have coexisted exchanging influences. The ritual nature of Teuksusin-bonpuri was identified by looking at its relationship with the siwangmaji gut (a rite for worshipping the Ten Kings of Myeongbu, where judgment takes place in the underworld). Since special deities are considered minor gods, its narratives can share commonalities with that of "Chasa Bonpuri," which is used for the siwangmaji gut, delving into the fundamental issue of death. The traces of "Woncheongang Bonpuri" and "Seminhwangje Bonpuri" are preserved in the seoksallim (a ritual to invite gods at each stage of a gut rite) while "Heogungaegi Bonpuri," included in "Chasa bonpuri," has been recited during rites. The traces of "Samdugumi Bonpuri" can be found in the gunbyeongjilchim (a stage of a gut rite). As bonpuri is facing the crisis of disappearing in local shamanic rites, this study sought to reconstruct the meanings of bonpuri based on its traces in local rituals. Teuksusin-bonpuri shares the same world view with "Barideogi," a Korean ritual song, the myths of Inanna and the Epic of Gilgamesh. This study sought to find the significance of Teuksusin-bonpuri in that it represents cross-boundary thinking system by breaking the boundaries of "I" and "the other" and the replacement of this and the other worlds. It is noteworthy that the characters in Teuksusin-bonpuri search for their way forming relationship with other beings and asking and answering questions about these relationships in order to go on a journey filled with hardships that humans can hardly bear. This process breaks the boundaries and makes humans, non-humans, and souls communicate with each other. The spaces serving as the setting of Teuksusin-bonpuri narratives are separated from each other but harmonized with one another. The characters of Teuksusin-bonpuri exist on these boundaries. The spaces that the characters travel between have different characteristics. These spaces have a certain relation to each other, which can be understood as the coexistence of opposites. What is experienced and told by the characters of Teuksusin-bonpuri is based on people's everyday life where life and death are interconnected; therefore, its message is something ordinary and fundamental, and about the philosophy of life that people can easily relate with.
