- Abstract
- This study is to understand the generation principle of chapping technique for expansion of ceramic decoration techniques using the properties of clay, to draw 'brush chapping technique', and to suggest a new type of tea cup design. The chapping technique is a unique shaping or decoration technique that expresses the most essential property of clay with the use of various tools and additives. It is classified as an accidental effect due to the difficulty of perfectly adjusting the degree of clay's chapping. Due to the complexity of producing methods and this unpredictability of patterns' results, it is necessary to establish the reproducibility of the chapping technique as a decoration method and to research specifically to expand the areas of expressing the most essential property of clay. Therefore, this study focuses on establishing data by developing an intentional and regular brush chapping technique and making specimen according to shaping method and engraving technique and on using the brush chapping technique in actual ceramic works. The processes of the study are as follows. First, the generation process and problems of the chapping technique are analyzed through the theoretical review, and the notion of brush chapping technique is drawn. Second, specimen were made with the use of engraving technique in three methods of stamping, straight line and curve on the wheel shaping technique and plate shaping technique with the 9 types of brush tools that are classified into three types according to shapes, and they were baked according to whether they have glaze. Third, the baked results of specimen were analyzed, and the data of brush chapping patterns were established. Lastly, the brush chapping patterns drawn through the experiment were used to suggest a new type of tea cup design with the characteristics of teas and drinking purpose considered, so the expansion of ceramic decoration techniques was sought with the application of various feelings that can be acquired through the brush chapping patterns to the functions of tea cups in addition to practicality and aesthetic element.
