제주 우도 주민의 물이용에 관한 연구

Abstract

제주 사람들은 빗물이 지하로 스며든 후에 암석이나 지층의 틈새를 통해 지표로 솟아나는 용천수를 먹는 물로 사용했다. 그러나 용천수가 충분하지 않을 때는 봉천수를 먹는 물로 이용하기도 하였다. 봉천수는 개인집의 지붕이나 나무에서 내리는 빗물을 항아리에 모아 사용하거나 마을 공동의 저수지에 빗물을 모은 것인데 용천수가 확보된 곳에서는 생활용수나 소나 말이 먹는 물로 사용하였다. 물의 확보 문제에 있어서 우도 지역은 제주 본섬보다 자연적인 제약이 더 컸다. 제주 본섬에는 한라산과 계곡이 있고 해안을 따라 용천수가 나오고 있었지만, 우도에는 산이나 계곡이 없어서 제주 본섬이 갖는 자연조건과 달랐다. 이러한 외부적인 환경이 우도에서의 물 확보를 어렵게 하였고 가뭄이라도 들면 더욱더 큰 위기가 닥쳐왔다. 또한 우도에 들어와 사는 사람들이 많아짐에 따라 식수 부족은 더 심해졌다. 물 부족은 우도 섬을 짓누르는 압력이었다. 이 논문은 우도 사람들이 겪었던 물 부족이라는 위기에 초점을 맞추어 물 부족 문제를 봉천수 물통으로 해결하려 하였던 점을 조사하였다. 우도에 사람이 살기 시작한 이래 물 문제는 해결하기 어려운 과제였는데 우도 사람들은 어떻게 물 부족 문제를 해결하였는지도 함께 조사하였다. 그리고 식수 부족 문제가 해결된 지금, 우도 섬 주민들에게 봉천수 물통은 무슨 의미가 있는지를 설명하였다. 이 논문에서는 우도 주민들이 봉천수 물통을 만들어 사용하면서 우도의 자연환경을 받아들이고 물의 자급을 실천했던 생활 사례를 조사하고 정리했다. 가뭄으로 물 부족 사태가 벌여졌을 때는 제주 본섬의 도움을 받아 위기를 극복하였고, 최근에 들어서서 해저 상수도관을 연결하여 간신히 오랫동안 주민들을 힘들게 했던 물 문제를 해소하였다. 그러나 주민들은 아직도 여전히 과거의 물 부족 때문에 곤란을 겪었던 시절을 기억하고 있었으며, 물통을 메워버리지 않고 지속적으로 유지하면서 물이 부족해질 때를 대비하는 생각도 갖고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

The Jeju people used Yongcheon-Su, which rises as a surface through cracks in the rock or strata, as drinking water. However, when Yongcheon-Su was not enough, Bongcheon-Su was used as drinking water. Bongcheon-Su is a collection of rainwater from individual houses or trees, or from community reservoirs, where Yongcheon-Su is available, Bongcheon-Su was used for domestic water and cows, horses. In terms of water availability, the Udo Island region had greater natural constraints than the main island of Jeju. Although Jeju main island had Halla Mountain and valley and Yongcheon-Su along the coast, there were no mountains or valleys in Udo Island, which was different from the natural conditions of Jeju main island. This external environment made it difficult to get water in Udo and even bigger crisis came when drought came. Also, the shortage of drinking water became worse as more people moved to Udo Island and lived there. Water shortages were a pressure that weighed down Udo Island. This thesis focused on the crisis of water shortages that the people of Udo Island experienced and examined how they tried to solve the water shortage problem with a bucket of water. Since people lived in Udo Island, the water problem was a difficult task to solve, and people in Udo Island also investigated how they solved the water shortage problem. And now that the shortage of drinking water has been resolved, the people of Udo Island have explained to them what the bucket of Bongcheon-Su means. In this thesis, the residents of Udo Island made and used the bucket of Bongcheon-Su to accept the natural environment of Udo and to practice water self-sufficiency. When water shortages were caused by a drought, the crisis was overcome with the help of Jeju main island, and recently, water problems that had been difficult for residents for a long time were resolved by connecting the water supply pipes. However, residents still remember a time when they suffered from water shortages in the past, and were able to confirm that they were prepared for water shortages while not filling up the water tanks.
