A Study on the Historical and Cultural Archetype of Horses in Jeju and Measures to Develop Cultural Content
Abstract
Various horse-related cultures are found in Jeju and it is a well-known fact that Jeju supplied most of horses to meet the demand in the state, from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty.
Content using horses in Jeju is a cultural industry with high economic added value as a cultural product. However, most of horse-related businesses in Jeju focus on general tourism due to the regional characteristics of the island; there is lack of understanding of the traditional horse farm and horse culture in Jeju, and the development and implementation of cultural contents are also insufficient. In this context, this study was carried out, given that effective measures to transmit and maintain traditional horse farms and the horse culture in Jeju were needed.
The horse culture in Jeju is transmitted as various historical and cultural resources in life that is represented as myths, history, amusement and rites that are the archetypes of cultural contents. There can be a wide range to utilize Jeju horses, which are historical and cultural resources, as cultural contents.
Recently, the traditional form of horse farming and culture of Jeju horse farms are fading away due to changes in the form of village in the middle mountainous area in Jeju. The traditional horse farm in Jeju is losing its original form due to the policies of Jeju Province focusing on the development of the island and in the indifference of Jeju-do residents.
Therefore, this study intended to present new content, from which we can learn the history of Jeju horses, using Jeju horses that hold enough historical and cultural resources. The purpose of this study is to suggest the re-creation of the Jeju horse road using the Eco Healing Horse Road and a model that could contribute to the promotion of the history and culture of Jeju horses. The development of Jeju horse road content based on various living cultures in Jeju including nature, myths, history, amusement and rites is a valuable task and will be also helpful to the economic development in Jeju.
The development of cultural contents based on cultural archetypes still existing and remaining in the history can create cultural values that Jeju people living in modern times and cultural immigrants can share with each other.
The modern age is the era of globalization, and a form of content that simply shows local cultures cannot survive in this era. Only when content can help discover various original histories and cultures that show regional cultures clearly and provide stories with significance and value, can it serve as genuine cultural content that represents the regions. For such reason, this study suggests the Jeju horse road for the development of cultural content that shows the unique culture of Jeju. Considering the fact that Jeju was an important horse farm in the history, this study also suggests a method to develop mementos using mapae (horse plates) in the Joseon Dynasty period as a cultural archetype with regard to the horse culture remaining in Jeju.
The Jeju horse road as cultural content, "A road in Jeju for learning and feeling the history along with horses," can become a medium that links between the history of Jeju, Jeju horses and people. And, the original history and culture of Jeju horses can be propagated and the tourism industry using the Jeju horse road can be developed. The Jeju horse road will become an important place that conveys various significance to modern people and provide an excellent opportunity that our future generations who will live in Jeju will enjoy. It is expected that shedding light on the historical and cultural value of the horse culture in Jeju and the development and promotion of those cultural elements will lead to the improvement of Jeju's brand image.
This study does not present specific methods to expand the horse culture into the zone of our culture and life and develop contents in various forms. It is hoped that Jeju horse content with specific plots will be researched and implemented continuously in the future. It is also hoped that the tangible and intangible properties of the fading horse culture in Jeju will be preserved well and the horse culture in Jeju will be widely known.
