A Study by Reinterpretation of the Records of Ibchunchungyeong in Jeju
Abstract
This paper is a study on the Jeju ibchunchungyeong records. The existing interpretation of the ibchunchungyeong record was made through the form of Jeju gut. For this reason, ibchunchungyeong's mask play was understood as gutnol-i. ibchunchungyeong should be understood as go-eulnalyelo. The mask dance, which was widespread in the late Joseon Dynasty, was also performed in Jeju. The ritual of King Tamla, the basis of Jeju ibchunchungyeong, was not a form of go-eulnalyelo.
In the Joseon Dynasty, however, Jeju ibchunchungyeong was led by Jeju officials. Therefore, it would have been difficult to insist on Jeju's own rituals. Jeju Island, too, may have accumulated and developed its own culture through cultural exchange. Even though Jeju was remote from the land and forbidden to go out of the island for a long time, there was a clear exchange between Jeju and other areas. Jeju's unique culture should not be called Jeju alone. What is important is the issue of identity and values of Jeju culture. Many cultures originally considered to be unique to Jeju are also formed through exchanges with other regions. It is the interpretation and change of the culture of other regions that entered Jeju in the way of Jeju.
Of course, Jeju Gut can be seen as the foundation of Jeju culture. However, limiting Jeju traditional culture to Jeju gut is to lock yourself in a small cage. The magnificent Buddhist culture of Tamraguk in the Koryo Dynasty should also be understood as Jeju's culture. The acceptance of Confucian culture, which was a political philosophy of the Joseon Dynasty, is also Jeju culture. The influence of Buddhism and Confucian culture on Jeju Gut became the culture of Jeju Gut that was accepted and changed in the way of Jeju Gut. Likewise, Jeju Ipchun Chun Kyung Ritual contains the contents of Jeju Gut. In other words, Jeju Gut has changed the style by actively accepting cultures from other regions. The masked dance that was accepted at Ibchunchungyeong also contains the contents of Jeju gut. This is not to shake the fundamental foundation of Jeju Island's culture. It is also Jeju culture that recognizes the diversity of Jeju culture and accumulates such culture in Jeju's own way. So far, the academic and cultural circles have focused only on the executioners of Ibchunchungyeong. Indeed, the leader of Ibchunchungyeong was ignored. Ibchunchungyeong has a stronger political meaning than the magical means of solving the problem of faith.
Do not deny that Jeju is not foreign. You can repeat as many different forms of culture form and disappear. Jeju Ibchunchungyeong Mask Dance is also a culture of Jeju that was forgotten for a while and then revealed to us again.
