A Study on the Design Characteristics of Munjado in Jeju Island
Abstract
'Munjado' that made by commoner in the late Joseon Dynasty is used in religion, wedding, decoration. and it appears different cultures from region to region. in addition, this culture developed with showing capitalism tendency in the late 19th century which leads economic growth and securing marketability. Munjado has a special region characteristic. Especially Jeju Munjado is influenced by society of commoner, political background so it is deeply in connection with everyday life and religion in Jeju. This study is for theoretically considering the Munjado that representative of Jeju culture, finding difference in the different regional and contemporary, based on Jeju Munjado. analyzing the unique Munjado is made by unusual natural environment and local culture at a design perspective This study investigates Munjado's social background, folk painting and the process of formation and examines the meaning and symbol of Munjado in Jeju. First, separates Munjado to text and background, and then analyses 'composition', 'shape', 'color', 'unity', 'repetition', 'balance' at a design perspective and compares Jeju Munjado with different regional and contemporary one. The conclusions obtained from this study are as follows. first, The background of the development of 'Munjado' is the policy of the common people of Joseon to encourage the common people to embrace the issue of the status system. Accordingly, the fall of the aristocracy and the atmosphere of the commercial society, which has capitalist marketability, has brought about the development of the working class culture. second, the reason why Munjado is naturalized in Jeju is they always worried about poor life and japanese invasion so they rely on their ancestors as praying new hope became the meaning of Munjado Third, Munjado in Jeju is a symbol of the place where ancestral rites can be held as filial piety and shrine. fourth, Gangwon-do and Gyeongsang-do has a standard pattern with characteristic in region. more over, in modern, they express various forms depending writer's ways. Fifth, Jeju Munjado was divided into phases, middle, lower or lower, and was classified as a text and background and applied 'composition', 'shape', 'color', 'change', 'unity' and 'balance' at a design perspective. 'composition' is expressed Hallasan mountain in the top, and expressed ground or sea in bottom. through this ways, they appear closed local feature and 8 symbols that represent confucian virtues so they are called 'Three-stage sphere Eight widths' 'Shape' is a simplified form of 'filial duty', 'brotherly love', 'loyalty', 'sincerity', 'manners', 'fidelity', 'integrity' and 'bashfulness' which emphasize the characteristics of the exterior but erase strokes and it shows a precursive style and a bibliography. and then it is simplified shape, light and shade, and color by applying 'simplification of space' and 'simplification of form' the most common type of 'color' is cloudy pink to red and turbid purple color, in background, used light brown to green and turbid green. it more includes light, cloudy, murky, and dark than primary color. 'change' is mainly due to changes in the thickness and length of the pattern of the wave pattern in the text and the shape shown in the background. 'unity' has a regularity in which the ratio and position of the letters are repeated, and the pattern of wave patterns is repeated for each part of the letter being broken. and if look at background vertically, it arranged background – text – background and it contain a line that divides the background and text, giving sense of unity. 'Balance' shows a symmetrical balance in text and background, and among them, it shows a stable balance where symmetry is used mostly by the use of decalcomani techniques. this study expects, through study of Jeju Munjado, we can understand Munjado at a design perspective, lead to the develop of Jeju culture, and become the base of studying Jeju culture
