A Study on Nietzsche's philosophy of Culture : With Focus on Restoration of Nature and Overcoming of Values
Abstract
The importance of culture in our society is increasing so much that the 21st century is referred to as the era of culture. Here, culture means the sum total of various human attempts to escape from the state of barbarism. Therefore, culture forms the essence of human existence, everything created by man. This means that culture has a constant relationship with humans, not an entity-independent concept. Culture, therefore, is a kind of means for humans to understand themselves, and a means to mediate between humans and the world. Therefore, to examine the essence of culture is to ultimately consider the nature of human beings. As you know, man's self-awareness of 'what is human?' was a goal that remained unchanged in philosophical quests like Archimedes' solstice. But questions like this still remain unsolved to this day despite thousands of years of research. In addition, such questions extend into a modified form of 'what is culture?' And questions like this also exist in an incomplete form. Because culture is gradually expanding even at this moment, and the extensibility of - 161 - these cultures makes it difficult to set the universal valid concept rules for culture. Therefore, culture is often defined as a verb, not a noun. This is because culture is not a concept that refers to works of art or literature, but a source of life associated with various forms of human behavior that are created at every moment through human activity. However, the scalability of these cultures defines today's culture as a kind of product, especially an "industry" produced by demand and supply, combining it with huge capital, and this kind of "cultural industry" degrades the majority of humans to just consumers of culture, not the creators of culture. Adorno and Horkheimer define the characteristics of these cultures as pop culture, and diagnose that such pop culture is degrading humans to a state of barbarism. In other words, a culture as a commodity makes nature the object of domination through enlightenment. For this reason, a culture only presents an ideological role to humans, and as a result humans are dwarfed through a culture. Nietzsche's philosophy of culture research, which is conducted through this study, starts with a sense of problem about culture. Nietzsche diagnoses the crisis of culture for all his reasons and looks for ways to overcome it. In other words, for Nietzsche, the average life that arises after disenchantment is defined as having altered the original meaning of culture. In addition, Nietzsche points to this structural contradiction of average life and culture. This means that Nietzsche's philosophy of culture does not just remain at the level of consideration about culture and cultural history in a limited time, but rather is a discussion of the underlying foundations of culture. Through examining Nietzsche's philosophy of culture, I try to find clues to heal the increasingly deepening decadence of culture in modern society. Because I think Nietzsche's philosophy of culture provides ideas that can solve many problems stemming from the distorted phenomenon of culture. In addition, Nietzsche puts his philosophy of culture at the forefront by diagnosing and criticizing the problems of contemporary culture. This means
