The Effect of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy-based Group Intervention on Children's Anxiety and Self-esteem
Abstract
This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of rational emotive behaviortherapy (REBT)-based group therapy programs on anxiety and self-esteem inelementary school students. Ten fifth and sixth graders were recruited for thestudy, and the group for the REBT program was divided into two groups of six11-year-old children and four 12-year-old children. The children participants andtheir parents in the REBT group program conducted self-report andparent-report questionnaires as a pre-evaluation to assess anxiety levels andself-esteem before the program started, and a post-evaluation of the sameconfiguration was conducted after the program ended.The REBT-based group therapy programs applied to this study were plannedand reconstructed to a level targeted at older elementary school children basedon prior studies and examination of related materials, aimed at reducingparticipants' anxiety levels and enhancing self-esteem. The configured REBTprogram was implemented once a week for 90 minutes, with a total of sixsessions per week over six weeks. To verify the effectiveness of this study, anonparametric statistical analysis of changes in the level of anxiety andself-esteem of participants evaluated pre- and post-evaluations was conducted.We also conducted further analysis of changes in participating childrenthroughout the program through a qualitative analysis of materials related to theREBT program, including various worksheets written directly by childrenparticipants within the program, session records by researchers as a groupleader and a co-leader of the program, and program satisfaction questionnairesconducted on participating children and parents.The results of this study have shown that REBT-based group therapyprograms have significant implications for reducing anxiety and promotingself-esteem in elementary school students. Based on the results of this study,further clinical implications and future directions for research are discussed andsuggested.
이 연구의 목적은 합리정서행동치료(Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy,REBT) 기반으로 내용을 구성한 집단치료 프로그램이 초등학생의 불안과 자아존중감에 미치는 영향에 대한 효과성을 검증하는 것이다.
이 연구를 위해 연구자는10명의 초등학교 5-6학년 학생들을 모집하였고, 11세 아동 6명으로 구성된 집단,12세 아동 4명의 임상집단으로 나누어 프로그램을 진행하였다. 프로그램 참가자들은 프로그램 시작 전에 불안 수준과 자아존중감을 평가하는 사전검사를 시행하였고, 동일한 구성의 사후 검사를 프로그램 종료 후에 시행하였다.
이 연구에 적용된 REBT에 기반한 집단치료 프로그램의 내용은 선행연구들과관련 자료들에 대한 고찰을 기반으로 초등학교 고학년 아동을 대상으로 하는 수준으로 기획 및 재구성하였다. 연구자는 참여자들의 불안 수준 감소와 자아존중감을 증진을 위한 REBT 프로그램을 90분씩 매주 1회 총 6회기로 6주에 걸쳐 시행하였다. 연구자는 이 연구의 효과성을 검증하고자 사전 사후 검사에서 평가된 참여자들의 불안 및 자아존중감 수준의 개인 내적 및 집단내 변화에 대한 비모
수 통계 분석을 시행하였다. 또한 질적 분석자료로 프로그램 참여자가 프로그램 내에서 직접 작성한 다양한 워크시트, 연구자 및 보조 연구자의 회기별 평가 기록, 참여 아동 및 보호자 대상으로 실시된 프로그램 만족도 설문지 등을 활용하였다. 이를 통해 연구자는 프로그램 전반에 걸쳐 참여 아동들의 변화 측면에 대한 추가 분석을 진행하였다.
연구 결과, REBT기반 집단프로그램이 아동의 불안 감소와 자아존중감 증진에 유의미한 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 기반으로 REBT 프로그램을 아동에게 활용하는 것에 대한 치료적 프로그램의 근거를 제시하고 후속 연구 개발을 위한 논의 및 제언하였다
